Sun Mini Comp II Compass – lightest baseplate compass?

I ran across this compass the other day.  It weighs only 9 g(!), a third the weight of my Silva Polaris.  For basic map checking while on trail, do you think this would suffice?  Nearly all my hiking is done on trail.  I mostly use my compass in those rare instances where I need to make sure I’m on the right trail.  I do normally bring a map and compass with me on every trip.

Anyone have experience with this or know of any better alternatives?

They are well known, and not very good. Because they are so small and cheap  they are poorly balanced and tend to stick at any angle. I found the ones I tested far too unreliable.  YMMV.

Cheers

Does anyone know of a reliable baseplate style compass that weighs around 0.5 oz?

The Brunton TruArc 3 compass is quite flexible: it has a good sized housing for taking bearings, a declination adjustment, and a detachable and re-attachable base plate. Wt. without base plate is 0.78 oz on my scale (1.1 oz with base plate).
