Suggestions for a sun shirt / eco-mesh replacement

My favorite hiking shirt, the Rail Riders eco-mesh, has been discontinued, I’m looking for a replacement.

I’ve been using eco-mesh shirts for the last dozen years. They were my top pick for western thru hikes and for field work in the desert southwest. I loved their ventilation, bug protection, sun protection, and non-stinkyness. I could wear them every day, with weekly washings, for months at a time and people would still mistake me for a day hiker.

These shirts are no longer made. The replacement models don’t work for me. I find the fabric clingy and clammy against the skin. The manufacturer says that the new fabric outsells the old fabric by a huge margin. That is great for them.

I’m looking for a tight weave shirt to wear while hiking in the american southwest. I’d like a shirt that:

  1. mosquitos can’t bite through
  2. can withstand off-trail walking in thorny scrub
  3. has long sleeves for sun protection
  4. has good ventilation. I hate the heat!
  5. has a loose, airy fit and is not clingy.
  6. either button up or pull over is fine

What suggestions do you all have? Thanks!

I’m really liking the Patagucci Sun Stretch shirt that RJ reviewed a while back. The vents on the chest pockets allow a nice amount of airflow even when wearing a pack. I had mine treated with InsectShield and have not had any mosquitos bite though it a couple weekends ago in the Sierra. I haven’t worn it through thorny scrub yet so I can’t speak to it’s durability in that situation.

Check out the Eddie Bauer Rainier shirt. It’s a nice, simple button up that has a fairly tight weave and a good fit IMHO. So far mosquitos don’t seem to get through it. I can’t seem to find them online, but the local store has had them in stock for the last year or so.

I’m going to bet that their Adventure Top is going to be the closet replacement. I don’t have one to give you a comparison, but I’ve been looking at them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wouldn’t of known about the Sun Stretch’s pocket vents. I’ll give it a try. I’ve got one coming in the mail.

+1 on the Sun Stretch.  I haven’t treated mine with permethrin yet but I haven’t gotten any bites through the fabric.  It has a soft feel and baggy fit. I sized down since I didn’t like how baggy it was but sometimes I wish I didn’t for the extra air flow.

Unless they changed the model in the past year, the chest pockets are nice but don’t have vents in them; they’re double layer of the same fabric.  Unzipping them might make it breath a little better but I doubt it’s noticeable.

Whoops, I need to amend my earlier recommendation based off of Paul’s comments:

Patagonia’s sizing is all over the place in my experience and the Sun Stretch is cut very, very large. I had to go down a size and it is still loose on me.

The vents I mentioned are the chest pockets. They are lined with a huge field of mesh that goes all the way to the seam on the side. I don’t carry anything in the pockets but instead use them as vents. However Paul is right, they are actually pockets. I’m sorry if that caused any confusion.

Have you looked at solumbra ultimate adventure shirt? I still wear my RR shirts, but wanted to give Solumbra shirt a try and so fare I really like the airflow when wearing. I like the fabric much better then RR , because it’s softer but still seems like it will standup to wear. It’s a lose fitting shirt like RR which I like.

Reading the description it should have mesh so mine must be an older one with solid fabric in the pockets.  Nice upgrade.
