Second… if you are looking for ultralight spinning reels I think you added too many “n’s” on Pen:

I don’t own a Pen fishing rod… but they seem really small and cheap.  I have a Pflueger President (6 oz w/out line).  A really nice reel at and nice price.  The extra weight seems worth it to me for fishing.  I talk about buying my recent setup here:

I just bought one.  My dad used to fly fish in the Sierra’s so maybe I will remember something from that.  I know he always had such good luck with the rainbows.

You really need to match the reel to the rod in terms of ultra light action, light action, medium action, heavy action…etc. That Penn 3000 is what I call medium action in that it handles 8-12lb test line. So, my guess is that he has a medium action rod as well and he’ll need a medium action reel replacement. Fishing equipment is like everything else, you can shave a few ounce for an extra hundred or more dollars. I have tried them all and I only use Shimano reels anymore. Best value for the $$ in my opinion.

Some of the more reasonable priced medium action Shimano reels are the Symetre or Sahara in the 2500 or 3000 series. However, they are only going to save you an ounce or two.

If he really wants to go lighter, he’ll probably need to drop down to a ultralight/light action outfit (rod and reel) with a reel in the 1000 series. These outfits are for lighter lures and line lb test.

William- that is some great advice!  Thank you for posting that!  I bought my son a collapsable rod and now I need to match the reel to it for the reasons you mentioned.  It’s very light weight.  This is very exciting and new to him as he only done salt water fishing here in FL.  Thanks again!
