I’m headed to do this loop early August. This is a completely new area to me so any tips are welcome.

My main question is about food storage. Do I need to bring a canister in that area or would hanging my food be possible?

Hanging is possible everywhere. I’ve been there 1/2 a dozen times at least and never had a problem. If the blueberries are in you’re likely to see bears in Lyman Basin, but I can’t recall seeing them anywhere else on that loop. They are not human habituated at all in my experience.

One of my all time favorite areas. Take your time and don’t rush through it – every part is amazing on its own with lots of side exploring options.

Ditto what Curt said, and don’t skip the side trip up to High Pass.

Agree that this is stunning country. Don’t skimp on your time there, if possible.

Beautiful area. If you summit Spider gap early in the AM, be sure to take proper traction for the North side descending into Lyman Lakes area.

I am planning on taking my tenkara rod too for some catch and release. Good idea or no?
