Spare sunglasses on the trail

Yes I do carry spare sunglasses, a cheap $12- pair just in case I break my Oakleys while ski touring, snow-blindness isn’t fun and my goggles are Rose for low, flat light conditions

There are some really lightweight ones (2.5 grams) sold to ophthalmologists for after they’ve dilated patients’ eyes.  You (and 99 of your friends) can get them for 39 cents a pair:

I’ve broken mine, and had to do a trail repair…which is a story in itself. And I’ve considered taking an extra pair–as well as an extra pair of my regular glasses.

But so far, I’ve managed to leave those extra tiny ounces behind.

Sporteyz roll-up sunglasses have an elastic band to hold them on. I had a pair as a spare once and lost my sunglasses and had to walk over days of snow. I was really glad I had them. I’ve also saved the ones from the eye doctor. They’re super dark but in snow or white granodiorite they’d be a godsend.

Is there any remote chance this post is motivated by the fact you lost said Suncloud glasses on Shepherd Pass a couple weeks ago?

Next time you’re at the eye doctor, you can pick up these for free, flexible, fold flat, throw-away, 4 grams…good contingency eye protection.

I’ve never carried spares and haven’t damaged or lost a pair on the trail yet.

That said, I do think about this and figure I’d use a map or journal paper (or bark) and go northern style in an emergency….

This could be done with either slits or perforations.

Perhaps even a doubled or tripled bug headnet…

Going with Craig’s idea. You could put slits in your headlamp headband then it would be no additional weight.  I’m very light sensitive but have never packed a spare pair.

I think a neck strap is crucial. If not on my face they’re around my neck. If not around my neck, straight to their case….

Yeah yeah…the ‘original’ idea was a Powerbar wrapper (remember when they were made of clay, and the wrapper a piece of NASA foil?) with little slits in it tucked into your hat. Snow survival!

I need something a little more…functional. Liking the idea of dollar store finds. Gonna do that this weekend. Might be surprised at the BPL finds…
