A while back, I sold my sil Duomid and got a sil Supermid to have a little more room. While it’s great for 2 to 3 people, it turns out there’s just too much room for solo trips with my dog (psychological thing?). Now that Ron has increased the size of the Duomid, I’ve decided to treat myself to a new one. The question is sil or cuben?
I have both a HMG flat tarp and a Patrol shelter in cuben and I have come to realize that I think I prefer silnylon in a flat tarp (better suited to multiple, alternate configurations and I wouldn’t hesitate to use a stick as a prop). The cuben works well in the Patrol because there’s really only one way to set the shelter up (no stretch or contortions needed).
In contrast, all the mids I’ve owned have all been sil (Megamid, SL3, Duo & Supermids). Most noticeable trait of this fabric is how much it stretches and how much water they seem to hold onto (surface tension?).
I’m not concerned with the longevity issue of cuben (I’m old – the longevity issue is with me not the shelter) but I do have 2 minor concerns/questions about a cuben Duomid. First, is the packed siz appreciably bigger than a sil one or is it trivial? Second,does the non-stretch of the cuben limit how you can set up the mid in any meaningful way.
