Seems there’s some debate about shipping fuel in your resupply.  I guess it’s illegal, but only if it’s shipped via air?

Anywho, I’m not endorsing any rule breaking by any means, but just out of curiosity how many people just mail it in their buckets?

I’m aware I’m probably being dumb here and should just buy it at Reds, VVR/MTR.  Its just in my personality to just try to minimize the amount of stuff I have to deal with ie. Waiting in line at the store,  What if they are sold out?

I’ve been reading the FB and Yahoo JMT Grouos compulsively for almost two years and I’ve never heard of VVR/MTR/RM/TM running out of isobutane canisters or alcohol. Also the hiker buckets at MTR have approximately 853 partially used canisters at MTR so you could grab a couple of those in the worst case scenario.

I don’t think the store at MTR ever has a line. They sell some t-shirts and fuel, not much more.

DO NOT PUT FUEL IN YOUR BUCKETS!

I did once – I put white gas in with the food supplies in a couple of air drops. ALL the food tasted/smelled quite horribly of white gas when we got there. The oatmeal was almost obnoxious – but we had nothing else. Cooking the oatmeal did not get rid of the smell. Long time ago, but my wife has not forgotten (neither have I).

That was liquid fuel – canisters would be fine except you cannot (legally) air mail them.

Christopher’s stuff is only going a few hundred miles, by ground. Can’t ship liquid fuel by air legally.

“but just out of curiosity how many people just mail it in their buckets?”

When I’m not reasonably sure I can get fuel at a resupply stop, I bite the bullet and ship fuel via USPS ground separate from other supplies.  The other supplies go by fixed rate priority mail.

The proper way to do this is mail it from a post office and tell them you are shipping the canister… go to the USPS Website and print out the regulation. Don’t ask how I know to print it out ;-)

Nick

I am sure it would be useful to know the URL to that regulation. Help?

Cheers

Thanks, Ken. I find that many government workers are poorly trained, especially Rangers in offices (try to get a straight answer on stoves) and postal workers. Not their fault — poor management.
