I bought a large can of Mountain House freeze dried chicken that I planned to use in my freeze bag meals I’m sending to Muir Trail Ranch for a JMT resupply. I need to send the resupply bucket ~ 4 weeks prior to the pickup date. I’m concerned that the side of the can says that the chicken must be consumed withing one week of opening.
What’s the shelf life commercial freeze dried chicken after opening? Will it be safe to consume 4 – 5 weeks after opening?
Jun 26, 2017 at 11:09 am #3475482Peter, I have been assembling my own freeze-dried dinners for the past 3 years, sending them to resupply locations several weeks in advance. Â Here’s what I do:
I use a vacuum sealer, vacuum seal bags, and an oxygen absorber. Â I trim off any excess bag material, and my meals pack down fairly small (like a Mountain House “pro pack”, but without the extra material).
I have never had a problem with meals prepared in that way.
