Attempting to seam seal MLD rain mitts (would pay another $40 at least to not have to do this :) and was attempting to dilute the seam sealer with klean strip odorless mineral spirits and then apply to inside seams via syringe. Was unable to even get the seam sealer to mix in 3 to 1 spirits to seam sealer ratio …. the seam sealer just got glommy and then started hardening up before I could even get to work and couldn’t get a good mix despite my best efforts, so trashed it. Am I using the wrong mineral spririts? Is it possible the McNetts they’re sending out is old? (noticed it’s now made by GearAid through an acquisition) …. thoughts on what I’m doing wrong? TIA

The MLD mitts I know of are made with eVent fabric. For that you are best to use Seam Grip. Don’t dilute that, apply it as it is.
If instead you want to use SilNet (silicone) you then can dilute it but best to use standard mineral spirit (paint thinner) NOT the vegetable nor the odourless type.
Seam sealing the mitts isn’t that big of a deal and I don’t quite get why many think it’s a hassle. Just sit down in front of your TV some night and seal them while watching a ball game or something not needing constant attention. You’ll have them done in 45 minuets or so.
yeah, seam grip is better, don’t dilute. You can dilute it but it requires toluene or something, not mineral spirits
if you’re diluting silicone, you want to use mineral spirits that’s not odorless. If it says it’s not flammable, it won’t work. If it says it’s safer for the environment, that’s not what you want. You want the stuff that’s bad for the environment, except as long as you don’t dump it it won’t hurt the environment. If you’re cleaning lots of paint brushes, maybe the odorless stuff would be good, which is it’s intended application. I’ve tried the odorless mineral spirits and the silicone just remains goopy and never dissolves.
With regular mineral spirits the silicone is goopy for a while. You have to stir for a couple minutes.
I’ve never tried diluting seam grip with mineral spirits, that would probably just remain goopy.
silicone is just good for silnylon or silpoly. seam grip for other fabric.
I used the toothpick and Seamgrip on the outside method.
My goal with diluting was to follow the example by some of the vids where they seal from the inside for cosmetic purposes. I realized the odorless spirits was the issue and that tolulene is what I needed per Seam Grip / Gear Aid’s faq’s. Then ditched that idea and sealed from the outside. Then tested with water. Found leaks. Sealed leaks. Tested again. Found more leaks. Sealed again …. sealed 4 times total and finally got the seams so there were no leaks…. and I was going heavy with sealant, so surprised it took so many times. Good to go now and will likely go another route next time when I need replacements … I’m too busy for this seam sealing shit :)
Has anyone ever tried using “Grout Sealer” as a seam sealer?
