Greetings all. I am trying to plan a multiday backpacking trip in Rocky Mountain National Park in either June or July. We’re going to have a few newbies to the hobby with us, and we’ll be hiking at elevation, so I’m looking for 30 to 40 total miles, only doing 8 to 10 miles per day. A little more than 40 is okay but I don’t want less than 30 if I can help it. It can be a loop or not, doesn’t matter. Has anyone been to this park or know of a good multiday route we can hike? Thanks so much in advance.

Lots of good options in RMNP, however, June can still have lots of snow at higher elevations, which can be an issue for newbies. Most all the trails are melted out by mid-July though, even the high ones going over the Continental Divide (usually). Also with newbies, you’ll probably want to stick to established trails rather than doing trips with off-trail portions.

The North Inlet/Tonohutu loop is a classic on the W side of the park.Ā I’m partial to the Wild Basin area – it always felt wilder than other parts of the park. You could hike up to Thunder Lake, then backtrack a bit and then up to OuzelĀ and Bluebird Lakes area for a night or two. Doing a traverse of the Never Summer Mountains is a different option – theĀ rocks and mountains as non-granitic, unlike most of the park. Lots of other options, especially for in-and-out (non-loop) trips.
