Practical Water Treatment Isle Royale

When my son and I decided to go to Isle Royale I assumed we would use my Steripen to treat water.  My son then read the water treatment recommendations on the NPS page. With both tape worms and viruses, the options are more complicated.

I have read all the relevant material on BPL and many other sources. There are many ideas for using pre filters to catch the tape worms and finishing with a Steripen. Squeeze filters would need to be combined with a Steripen or chemicals to be effective with viruses. All the options involve multiple steps and seem very inconvenient.

Reviewing pump style devices the MSR Guardian Water Purifier stood out. As a purifier one device covers all the water contaminants. It is fast and directly attaches to our collection of water containers that have wide mouth Nalgene threads. The process of using the Guardian seemed simple. On the negative side the Guardian is large, heavy, and very expensive.

I found the MSR Guardian Water Purifier for $50 off the normal price and decided to give it a try. When we took the new purifier out of the box and tried it at our kitchen sink, we found that the piston end nut was broken. I am in the process of returning the filter for replacement, but the seller does not expect to have more stock in time for our trip. If we want an MSR Guardian Water Purifier for this trip we will have to pay full price.

Before I place an order for another Guardian I am reviewing the options and backup plans for each option. What is the most practical water treatment process for Isle Royale? What backup plans should be in place for failure of critical parts of the treatment process?

Also boiling water is not a very practical backup plan for Isle Royale. Fire is only allowed in limited locations, and we do not plan to carry sufficient fuel to boil all our water.

Thanks

Jon I did read that topic topic.

There are some reports of a NoroVirus outbrake on the island that I can’t confirm.

I used to use, and still have in my hurricane emergency box, the First Need purifier.  It works easily and quickly, is a few oz lighter and much less expensive than the Guardian.  It may be a bit bulkier…I have never seen them side by side.

The primary threats to hikers from water on Isle Royale are

(a) Poisonous Chemicals, or the Toxins released by algae blooms

(b) Helminthic Parasites.

Isle Royale is known to have Hydatid echinococcus eggs who size is about 25- 30 micron in the water (especially in the inland lakes) that if not filtered can cause deadly tapeworm cysts contamination in humans as in moose as was documentation in 2001 by Rolf O. Peterson’s, in his wolf/moose report,  Ecological Studies of Wolves on Isle Royale.

“Prevalence of cysts is high in moose, the alternate host, and all moose examined from Isle Royale that are at least three years old harbor hydatid cysts in their lungs. Craig found antibodies for Echinococcus in all but three of the 88 scats collected from Isle Royale wolves in winter 2000.”

The bottom line is BOILING OR FILTERING your water will remove the 25 micron hydatid organism threat of the tapeworm. A Sawyer Squeeze Filter will work as I have used one for years for all waters of IR. Sawyer water filter features 0.1 micron absolute filtration.

After a bit more research I am thinking of going with this system:

  • Sawyer Squeeze Filter
HydraPak Seeker 2L for dirty water
    HydraPak Filter Adapter
    HydraPak Plug-N-Play Cap

For redundancy we also take one Sawyer Squeeze with the stock dirty bag.

It is questionable if virus protection is really necessary at Isle Royale, but to be safe we can add chemical treatment to our clean water containers.

This system is considerably cheaper than the MSR Guardian Filter we first planned to use, and is nearly half a pound lighter. It also has redundancy.

Virus in the water sources is not an issue that I know of to date. Your systems describe should do you well.

Have a great time !

Recently went on a group trip (5 scouts, 4 adults)  to Isle Royale, backpacking from Windigo to Rock Harbor from 5/27/23 to 5/31/23.

We used the recommendations for water treatment found on the ISRO website:  https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/drinking-water.htm

So we had one MSR Miniworks EX and two Sawyer squeeze filters for filtering the water first.  Then used Aquatabs for the chemical treatment.    Yes, it took a long time but it worked.   And we only used the additional chemical treatment for any inland water sources.  The couple of times we took water from Lake Superior we only filtered, and had no issues.
