I’m looking for light weight options to augment my current shaped tarp/mosquito net summer shelter system to better control cold wind, heavy fog condensation and rain splash-back (for 3 seasons and shoulder season use). The two options below are at the top of my list, and I’m leaning toward option 2:
- <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>New EE Recon bivy</span>. Looks like a good option to control wind, splash and some condensation.
PROS: It’s a simple, one-piece, no-fuss solution with lots of versatility. It could be used for cowboy camping easily. Unlike a groundsheet with separate mosquito net, the Recon provides 100% bug protection.
CONS: The bivy would add several ounces to my kit (at least for shoulder season trips), adds a zipper to deal with, has less room inside than my bug net, and is more prone to quilt top compression while side sleeping. While it would not provide as much protection in condensing fog as a full bivy plus BVL, it would likely help. - <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>Zpacks poncho groundsheet, size twin</span>.
PROS: Looks like the standard bathtub configuration would fit well with my Deschutes underside tie-out points to help with splash-back. The twin size looks large enough to nearly wrap completely around the lower half of a quilt during heavy rain splash or cold winds. The weight addition to my kit would be zero as this would replace a rain jacket and pack cover of same combined weight. It would also decrease the kit item count by one. As a raingear/groundsheet combo, it would always be carried and available for use if unexpectedly needed, even in the summer. In contrast, the bivy option would only be carried if cold wet weather is forecast or likely.
CONS: The groundsheet/poncho option is a little fussy to use as it is dual purpose as a poncho and not a one-piece solution. The twin size poncho/groundsheet is a little more pricy than the Recon bivy. The poncho/groundsheet would likely be less helpful against condensing fog than the Recon bivy.
Has anyone used the Zpacks twin poncho/groundsheet to successfully shed wind, rain splash-back and even fog condensation under a tarp? Am I trying to glean to many functional uses out of this product? I have a pretty good idea how the Recon will behave based on past bivy experience, but am unfamiliar with the Zpacks product.
With either above option, I’d still use my polycro groundsheet to keep sap off the poncho or bivy and help with abrasion too (plus the polycro is my sit pad/nap pad during the day). For context, my current summer shelter/sleep system has performed well in the WA mountains and Sierras and consists of an SMD Deschutes CF shaped tarp, 36×84 polycro ground sheet, 1/8” CCF 20×72 under pad, NeoAir Xlite Med inflatable pad, 20 degree EE Enigma with straps, Zpacks down balaclava and an STS Nano Mosquito Pyramid Net cinched partly closed and tucked under the NeoAir on all sizes. And if it’s rainy, a DriDucks jacket gets hung from the underside of the tarp and draped over foot box.
