Peeling/white flakes on Silnylon?

I took my MLD poncho tarp out for an initial backyard spin in the rain on Sunday. (Some people celebrate New Year’s with champagne, some people celebrate it by camping in the backyard in 35* rain under a poncho tarp). Since it was wet (rain tends to do that to shelters), I hung it out in the shower overnight to dry it out before storing it away. This morning, I noticed that the top side of the tarp was covered with little white flakes in places (photo below).

Is this something I should be worrying about as a coating/fabric issue? I’ve owned a few sil shelters in my day, and I don’t remember seeing this with any of the others, but I also wasn’t necessarily paying a ton of attention, so I can’t really tell if it’s just something that happens with brand new fabric or if it’s indicative of a potential issue. (FWIW, the fabric was VERY sticky when I got it, to the point that it took a bit of effort to get it pulled out flat the first time I took it out of its stuffsack. That’s never happened to me before.)

yeah, looks like silicone is peeling off

sticky initially?  I think the silicone coating wasn’t good.

Maybe return it?

Or take mineral spirits:silicone 10:1 and brush it over the surface, might fix it.  Let it cure for several days.  Wash it really well before doing this.  Try to get the peeling flecks off

I’ve seen that before on silnylon that was on the bottom of the floor so was abraded on the ground.

MLD uses no sil poly. Probably crap from the rain. Did you rinse it, or just hang it up?

Good to know- I’ll ping MLD and see what they say.  They’ve always been solid on the customer service front for me, so I’m not super worried. The poncho was like 2oz. over spec as well, which might mean something (I assumed not, since fabric weights and other factors vary and I’m not going to get bent out of shape over 2oz.)

It’s also probably worth noting that I was getting a surprising amount of misting hitting my face that night- I’m no stranger to getting condensation getting tapped off the tarp onto my face, but the surface felt pretty dry when I checked it. It was still probably just condensation getting knocked down, but now I’m wondering.

do the hose test … if it starts seeping.leaking through the fabric under pressure its misting

if it fails that recoat it as suggested above or talk to MLD about warranty

basically if there flakes from the coating the sil is coming off

;)

I wound up writing to MLD with a description of the issue and the picture. I got a response from Ron FIVE MINUTES later asking for my address to send a replacement. (FWIW, from a fabric standpoint, he described the issue as “really odd”.)

There is a reason I buy from this company.

Some silnylon does have some PU content. Not the coating layer type, just in the mix that nylon is impregnated with.

yeah, best to just replace it, if you spent the money to buy it new
