After using the search function, I didn’t see this topic covered.  Opinions?

Composed of over 90% air, our proprietary SolarCore aerogel has the lowest thermal conductivity of any solid. What does that mean? That it’s not only extremely strong, durable, and flexible; but it’s 2- to 8-times more effective than traditional insulation. Plus, SolarCore is compression-resistant and waterproof —something your old goose down jacket certainly isn’t. Air, it seems, is truly the best material for outdoor activity.

Call me crazy but I think it’s ironical that a jacket with the lightest insulation known to men (and women) ends up heavier than most.

3.5 lbs?

No thanks, that’s heavier than my winter quilt and down puffy combined.

Copied from their website… does not say much about the Parka shell which looks really overbuilt as in “tough, unconquerable”. NASA has come up with some fabulous things but a UL spacesuit is not one of them. Oros Apparel DOES have two lighter weight jackets for us earthlings but with only a couple of reviews (with no real revolutionary comments).

Here is the Parka which gets the most attention:

Where is Justin W. (arctusbear?) in this thread?!?  Seems his dreams are coming true!!!!

Seriously, so this thing is waterproof or not? Insulation is durable and effective when soaked and indestructible over time?  If so, could have some potential with future refinement.

Prices?

‘NASA-inspired’ is also quite a misleading bit of marketing black magic.

Anyone can call anything NASA-inspired, regardless of what it is..

Similar to E-bikes, I’ll write it off until the technology improves and becomes more accessible.

Aerogel itself is a NASA creation.  And in its raw form is the lowest density insulation in existence and the highest r-value for weight.

that said when you try to manufacture things with it you have to embed the aerogel into a cloth or fabric and that adds weight.

It is very effective pipe insulation for surface pipelines and refinerys as it can withstand very high heat and doesn’t get wet.

Everytime I talk to their reps for pipelines I keep asking them to make me a pair of gloves or boot liners.  So far no luck.

I checked out their webpage when I first heard about it as I’m a committed goose down wearer for warmth on my winter trips—but can always learn something new.  I wasn’t impressed with the scant reviews and may have to file this in my Gimmicks folder, along with waterproof down “tek” and other technologies.

Let me read a guy using it for a full year and 200 bag nights and then we’ll talk.
