Non-Smelly Black Trash Bags?

I’m trying to find black trash bags that can be used while camping for solar heating of water for bathing.  I would also use it to put gear in to keep dry during rainy spells.  I hike/camp in bear country and am concerned that the bags I’ve picked up in the last few years are scented (strong perfume smell).  Even the generic lawn and leaf bags seem to have this strong smell.

I’m looking for 20-30ish gallon size with a thicker plastic for durability and to hold water without pinhole leaking.  Has anyone out there found any non-scented black trash bags for sale at the store/online?

Oh, and I feel a bit uncomfortable in the store sniffing the trash bag boxes! :)

Sniff away…its for a good cause☺

Many have had the same issue finding non scented trash compactor bags used for pack liners.  I did a quick google search and there were quite a few links. I have used a nylofume bag for the last few seasons but they are clear plastic.

Doesn’t it take a long time to heat that much water? We use a Solar Shower car camping that is 5 gallons. Plenty for two showers. Not so heavy that you can actually move it if needed.

Thanks for the suggestions! Anyone else?

Ken: I normally only heat up a couple gallons at a time and the larger surface area of the trash bag makes for fast heating.  The only tricky part is keeping the bag flat/level and preventing water from spilling/leaking out.

Smell: you can rinse them out with a machine-dishwashing detergent like Cascade (rougher on your hands but much more effective than hand-washing dish soap) and warm water and then let them dry thoroughly, turning them inside and out.

Solar heater: More area is good.  Insulation underneath (like your sleeping pad) greatly reduces losses to the ground.  The thinnest layer of clear sheeting (2- to 4-mill) positioned over the black plastic will help a lot.  It lets most of the visible light through but bounces the IR back to the warm-water bag.  How about some aluminum foil to bounce sun towards a smaller bag?  I suspect it’s hard to get a large trash bag flat enough that there’s some water in all of it.  Some sturdier and more versatile than a large trash bag would be a sil-nylon dry bag in a dark color.  More puncture proof, better waterproofing for your gear.  And if you use some foil, you could gather just as much sunlight.  But try the clear sheeting over the water bag at home – you might be surprised how effective doing just that is.

A different take on the idea

But it needs to use multiple layers of plastic bags and is really an old idea.

You do need the ground insulation such as a cut down CCF pad. 4 emptied 4 litre wine cask liners, a plastic mesh onion or orange bag, a HD clear bag and a slightly smaller HD black bag.

Fill wine bladders half full with water or snow, place the mesh bag inside the clear bag on what will be the bottom, wrap these bladders in the clear plastic bag by overlapping the top to get a good seal, put this burrito into the black bag wrapping again to get a good seal, put the black bag on the CCF pad in the sun. You need the mesh bag so air can circulate around the water bags

Wait

It’s how I melt snow for drinking water and it works so long as you have sunshine

I don’t know how much it weighs as I’ve never bothered to weigh it

The white Hefty brand compactor bags from my local Ace hardware are unscented. I don’t have the box any more or I’d photograph it for you. Sorry.

I use the 3mil contractor bags from Home Depot as pack liners.  No smell.  Well, they smell like plastic, but no other smell.
