New pack help: MLD Core vs. Burn

After years of day hiking with a REI Flash 19 (flimsy shoulder straps and very short torso length), I’m looking for a light moderate sized pack for two main uses: 1) day hikes and, 2) short backpacks under 15 lbs total weight. Already have a GG Gorilla for longer heavier trips. The Gorilla feels overkill for short UL trips, but the Flash 19 is just a few liters too small for anything other than my base gear (no room for food or water). After looking at Zpacks, GG, Zimmerbuilt and KS Packs offerings, the MLD Core 28 and the Burn are at the top of my list. Seems like both could hold a Bear Boxer 101 canister (25 oz, 7 x 8 inches) for short trips in the Olympics, where canisters are required in some areas. FYI, base wt is 7 – 10 lbs (without canister) depending on season (WA state and the Mountain West).

After adding shoulder bottle pouches, sternum strap, bungee cord and the standard 10mm belt to the Core, the weight is pushing 11 ounces, just 2.5 ounces shy of the Burn with sternum strap. The Burn has a richer feature set than the Core, but even with added options the Core is much less costly than the Burn. I prefer side pockets for water bottles, but some rigged shoulder pouches worked OK recently on the Flash 19 too. So I’m unsure which way to go.

There are some good posts in BPL about the Core, the Core vs Zero, and the Burn in general. But I’ve only seen a few comments specifically about the Core 28 versus the Burn by folks who have used both packs. Would appreciate some input if you have both packs or something similar, especially for day use and sub-15 lb backpacks (and Bear Boxer 101 canister fit).

Lester, it’s not what you are asking about but as a long time Flash 18 user I picked up a Flash 22 a couple months ago on ridiculous sale and it’s a really nice pack. The extra couple liters, side pocket and tiny lid make it a usable pack for UL trips. I have a BareBoxer but I hadn’t thought to try putting it in there.

Anyhow if you’ve got an REI nearby you might want to take a peak at it while everything is on sale. It might work?

Good suggestion Matthew – how do you find the torso length on the Flash 22? Last year I looked at the Flash 22 in the store and it seemed a bit short and a few ounces heavier than similar cottage makers (but much less costly) and multiple unnecessary features (pockets inside, outside and zippered lid). With a total height of only 18″ from top to bottom, the torso length is a little less than ideal.

To be honest I have only used it dayhiking although I did pack it up for SUL overnight trip just to see if I could do it. I removed the hipbelt from mine so I don’t think I even noticed the length. It’s ballpark similar to my Flash 18.

I looked just now and they are selling for $50 again. I’m pretty sure I got mine for $25. I probably wouldn’t have purchased it at 50…

The lack of side pockets on the Core is a dealbreaker for me. I’ve used an MLD bottle pocket extensively and never been that pleased with it (or ZPacks bottle pocket either).

The Burn is a fantastic pack but it wasn’t for me because I couldn’t retrieve my bottles without loosening a shoulder strap. ::big sigh::

The lack of side pockets is the main reservation with the Core. I prefer filtering to chemical water treatment and have a nice gravity setup for a Sawyer Mini that straps to the side of the pack. The gravity system would require some strap additions to the side of the Core, but fortunately there are loops for attaching side straps if needed.

The main reservation with the Burn is that it’s too similar to my current GG Gorilla – both are full featured packs with slightly overlapping weight ranges, just minus the suspension system. And would the Burn feel like overkill for day hikes in the Olympics and Cascades?

Thanks mathew. This is exactly what I was hoping was out there.  Never occurred to me to look at REI.

If they bumped the price to $149 and changed the name to UL Flash 22 they could sell a ton of them.

Lester sent me a few questions that I’ll answer here.  Spoiler alert, if you’re going to choose between the Burn and the Core, go with the Burn.

1. How well do you consider the Burn filling the need of a 3 season day pack – mostly on-trail with light off-trail in the Mountain West?

I have the Prophet, Burn and Core.  Of the three I think the Burn is easily the best three season pack for both multi day trips and as a day pack.

2. Of these two packs, if you could only have one for frequent day trips (only half full of gear) and for occasional short UL backpack trips, which one would you choose and why?

Burn because of the pockets.  It weighs a bit more but I think the modest penalty is worth the added features.
3. Ron at MLD strongly suggests going with the Burn if in any doubt, but I’m still torn because of the much lower price, sleek lines and day packability of the Core 28.

I’m with Ron here.  If you end up going to the PNW-GGG and haven’t made a decision by then, message me beforehand and I’ll bring both the Core and the Burn for you to peruse.

Hi Lester,

About to post my 2017 MLD Cuben Burn here on BPL. PM me if you haven’t made your decision yet and are interested.
