Lately I’ve been pitching my duomid with an inverted V configuration. I made a cheap DPTE in plastic to test length and function. As I’m very happy with how it turned out, I decided to make one in carbon fiber instead. I ordered two pieces, 50mm long, for 358 SEK (about 40 USD). Weighed in at 77grams.

You can see the project in detail here:

    That hinge is sweet!

What materials are you using for the hinge?

That’s cool clicking through the pictures.  Nice description how to do it.

I wonder if shrink tube will break after a while, bending and unbending.  If so, move on to plan B.

    Carl-Fredrik.

I’ve had good luck with a similar hinge.  Here’s a link:

    What does DPTE stand for?

DPTE stands for Dual Pole Tip Extender.

Re duability of the shrink tube, I’ll guess time will tell :) but it feels very durable for sure and the prototype I made has lasted for quite some time and I see no wear really. Whenever it breaks it’s super easy to just replace it with a new one I guess.

@matthewkphx: It’s a heat shrink tube. Basically you apply heat to the material and it shrinks (quite a lot) until super tight.

    Carl-Fredrik,

Thanks for sharing this.  Would you mind telling us the diameter and wall thickness of the carbon fiber tubes?  What trekking poles are you using?  How well does the tube fit onto the trekking poles?

@bogardaw, the outer diameter is 16mm and the inner is 14. Fits the poles perfectly. For an even more snug fit, you can create a “mold” with glue (just search this forum, somehow mentioned it somewhere). But with so much of the pole sitting inside of the carbon poles, I doubt they would just jump out very easily.
