Multi Use Titanium stake Marshmallow roaster…needs modification though

Moving a previous post to a dedicated thread.

I take my kids backpacking as much as possible…and a tradition we enjoy is having smores for dessert. Most of the time we have been using found sticks, but some of the kids just start sucking on the branch ->

So instead…I would rather use a multi use 8″ titanium shepherd hook stake. Its way thinner/stronger than a thin branch, is easy to clean and sterilize…and…marshmallow sticks to it way less than a stick so smores are easier to make.

However, the stake is still too short for little hands (or adult hands) to use comfortably over a small fire. So…I want to find the best way to attach the stake to a branch ->

Anybody have ideas how to best handle this? I was thinking of using something like bike tube strips, which is how I handle lashing two trekking poles for my supermid ->

The material needs to be stretch and heat resistant….I’m thinking thin silicone strips, but where could I find some strips of stretchy silicone?

Any other ideas?

be careful about heating up marshmallows on a titanium skewer, it will cause the stake to get very hot and it can burn their lips and mouth, I know someone that this happened to, not good believe me. You could try using the BAMBOO SKEWERS for shish kabobs meant for barbaques .

but some of the kids just start sucking on the branch

And just what is wrong with that ?????
They will come to absolutely no harm at all if they do. You are trying to keep your kids dangerously sterile, which is never a good idea.
If you are really worried, whittle the bark off and pass the stick through the flames for a moment.
Yeah – Ti stakes will burn their lips badly.

Cheers

A titanium stick just works better as a roasting stick, and since I am already carrying it, I might as well repurpose it. Sure, is this a solution to a problem that doesn’t really exist? Yeah, but its fun to come up with solutions. And, only my youngest eats the marshmallows from a stick…b/c that is all she can eat (she has a gluten and dairy allergy so can’t eat graham crackers or chocolate), and the marshmallow never burns or gets that hot since we know she will just be eating from the stick directly, so it mainly just gets warm for her.

Anyway, as soon as someone said silicone tubing….I remembered that I already have some. I picked some up (and PIFd a bunch) from the local pet store from their aquarium tubing. So, I cut off a length and then cut if in half for some silicone strips…..using the ranger band method works pretty well ->

Also tried a velcro cable tie…..doesn’t work very well (can’t get it tight enough easily), and would probably burn/melt too quick ->

And using a long twist tie does work ok, though the plastic would probably melt too soon ->

Oh, and that firefork actually looks kind of cool, though would add 18g.

And I haven’t had a problem with the marshmallows rotating on the titanium stake…so the single prong is fine, though we could never get them too “gooey” since our hands would be too close to the fire when holding the stakes directly. Even if you have a double prong firestick, if you get them too gooey they just start drooping in the middle.

Ah marshmallows, I have always shaved a stick and toasted away but if you want to use the stake method I like the hose clamp idea. A small wide hose clamp would work excellent for holding it tight and would be quite reusable. Threading that little sweet treat on the hook side would also keep it from spinning if you want to toast them to a rich, brown and crispy bit of goodness.

I’m liking the idea of a hose clamp…will go to an auto parts store and see what they have. Would probably make the most secure connection.

And, nice idea of using the hook side…it would make it not spin, though….you would have to clean the stake afterwards….if I use the pointy end, all I have to do is push the stake in the ground for its intended usage of guying out my shelter.

I have two of the “Grandpa’s Fire Forks” and with the cover they weigh 16 grams each.  They’re only 9 grams without the cover and allow you to use a stick up to about 3/8″ in diameter at the end so you don’t have that sad drooping issue.

When I pack marshmallows I pack the Fire Forks.

Ok, I still like the idea of hose clamps…went to the auto parts store and they just had these ->

But….they are too hard to use with fingers…they would require pliers to use.

I have in my head a picture of a clamp…..basically like the above but with larger finger grips…though not sure what they might be called…

I’m even thinking that something like a large paperclip might possibly work….

Actually, I guess I’m thinking like these –

Though…..the springs would have to be easy enough to use with fingers so very light tension rating..

D -You will tear the flesh from your fingers trying to use those without the right tool. They are fuel hose clamps and as such are very strongly tensioned by nature.  What you want is a worm gear hose clamp found in all styles and sizes at any local auto parts store.

Again, a wide clamp with small dia. will do the trick. You can turn the screw with a pocket knife screwdriver attachment or even a dime in some cases. If you find a clamp with the right width but the dia. is too big, simply snip off the extra and file the sharp corners.

I have worm gear hose clamps….and saw those at the store…though I would rather not use something that requires even something else to use…..

As for whether using a stick could hurt you, my dad tells a story (probably apocryphal, but it’s funny) of a Boy Scout troop that chose the straightest sticks they could find for roasting their hot dogs……Cascara sticks (look it up).  Apparently the next day’s hiking was, um, challenging.

Probably not a problem in most areas.

Yikes, not a pleasant mental picture coming to mind :(
