Ezra, I created a ridgeline 1 inch from the bottom of the pot. the ridge is where the pot is supported by the Trail Designs Caldera Cone.  You can see the ridge in the photo.

(sorry, I’m new here, but…) what does the pot rest on in the normal caldera cone? what’s the difference between starlyte and more traditional (cat food can style) alcohol stoves?

    thanks!

Ezra, I’ll take a stab this:

I don’t think there is a cone that works with this pot without Dan’s ridgeline. One solution that is sometimes used is to support the pot with a silicone bracelet (like a Livestrong bracelet) but they inevitably get too warm and break.

I’ve played with many alcohol stoves but I’m not an expert by any means. Some of the benefits of a Starlyte over a cat food can stove are:

    • smaller size
    • increased fuel efficiency
    • spillproof
    • lid to keep the alcohol from evaporating
    • small flame in the center of the pot is better for smaller mugs because the flame is not flaring out around the side of the pot.

One benefit of a cat food stove is that you don’t need a pot stand.

You can’t really use a cat food can in a Caldera Cone. You need the pot to sit on the stove in order for it to burn properly.

A common method of supporting a ridgeless pot on a cone is two Ti wires (eg tent stakes) through the cone.

    Cheers

Caldera Cones are made for specific pots and they usually sit under the lip of the pot( you will see this in the first video posted above ) unless it is in the mode for burning wood and then it will sit on tent stakes that are inserted through holes that are drilled for that purpose in the screen , but there are many variations depending on what set up and pot you have.

    DAN,

Any plans on making more of these 650 kits available for us members? I could really use one later this spring.

    Thanks,

    Dan,

Re your photo of your Jun 12, 2016 at 7:18 pm post,

that’s a nice detail (the ridgeline, which rests on the cone).

    Elegant, even.
