Take a look at the Chattooga River Trail and/or Foothills Trail, which are just across the Georgia border in South Carolina. The Chattooga is probably my favorite trail I’ve done so far in the southeast.
I was there last Memorial Day, starting from Burrells Ford, and it was fairly busy that weekend, but generally, I run into only a few hikers and fewer campers. The hike along the river is beautiful, and of course water is plentiful so you never have to carry much. If you do spend sometime in the Foothills Trail, you will need to take more water, but still, you’ll encounter streams and creeks fairly often.
I’ve always done this as an out-and-back (I don’t think there’s a good way to make a loop), so I don’t have advice to offer regarding a shuttle. But I should look into that next time, because I could see much more of the trail that way.
