David, that’s a good approach to things. Unless my IT band issue flares up, I don’t expect to be the one who holds up the crew. On one 10 mile hike we did 2 years ago I ended up carrying a scout’s backpack along with mine for the last 2 miles because he was struggling so much.
I think if the scouts arrive well prepared for the “chores” part of Philmont, they’ll have more time to enjoy the other aspects of the trip.
