Lightest invertible canister stove?

There are too many variables, I think, XYZ. I can just make a two week trip at +32F using a Caffin V1 stove and a wind screen/heat shield. Without the windscreen, I can only go about 11-12 days, as a rough guess for the same conditions. So, yes. Without a windscreen, I have to go no cook for one or two days. With a wind screen, I have enough for hot meals every day.
But, there is no measured testing per day. On some days, I am sure that even using a wind screen, my use is higher than without. I don’t log things but basically I figure about 10 minutes to boil 750ml (about 3 cups) of water. I know about where the flame should be after a minute or two of operation. So it is consistent within about a minute. A little less flame when it is 70F ambient, a little more flame when it is 40F ambient. More than ten minutes wastes energy when it is colder. When it is 25F, I have to turn it up even more, to boil in about 7 minutes, for example. Otherwise more heat is lost to the outside air vs heating the water.

In my home, I tested the same set-up at 70F ambient and 2 cups at ~225gm/cup of 40-50F water to between 4-5gm per burn. I have run this test about 20 times at home.

In the field, I get 12 burns at 3 cups out of a 220gm canister, or 36 cups of water at ~225gm/cup boiled. Or about 6gm per cup. Close to 50% more fuel in the field than at home. I have run this test 10-20 times, and usually come home with a little to no fuel in the canister.

Anyway, these are ball park numbers. And, yes, a wind screen/heat shield can make a difference over a week or longer.

Thanks, James. Like you (I think), I go without resupplying for a long time so stretching one large canister is important to me.

I was going to be more specific or make an endless variables disclaimer :), but I figured that could limit the discussion.

I’m taking a tangent from the thread, but there must be a point where a remote canister stove with a good 360° windscreen can save enough fuel to make up ~3 oz vs a canister top stove. Is it within the use of an 8 oz canister?

Not very likely unless you employ really bad operator habits with one and not the other.

With any stove, even with a good windscreen, it is always good practice to find natural wind breaks (snow bank, rock shelf) or to make them from natural found materials such as snow, rocks, logs, etc, or use your pack as a wind break. I find that I can locate or make natural windbreaks 99.5% of the time and the other 0.5% I will just operate the stove inside my shelter.

Heat exchanger pots reduce fuel consumption.

The first thing is to figure out how much water you need to boil per meal. I need 2 cups in the morning and 2 in the evening. With ambient temps around 50 or above, this consumes 5g fuel per meal, so I need 10g per day. Colder than that, estimate 15g per day.

However, if all water is to be obtained by melting snow, I count on 3 times that amount, or 45g per day, and absolutely, positively use a heat exchanger pot for this task. Water for drinking does not need to be heated anywhere near boiling, although depending upon the cleanliness of the snow a secondary treatment (such as AquaMira) might be in order. If running water is available, always use that instead of snow for greatly reduced fuel consumption.

No difference in consumption between inverted stove and upright stove, although with inverted the stove is lower to the ground it could be a little less windy.

If it’s windy and you don’t have a windscreen efficiency will be very poor if flame isn’t blown out, so you really need a windscreen regardless

I boil maybe 7 cups of water a day.  About 20 grams of fuel.  I figure 28 grams (1 ounce) for margin, always less than that.  If it’s fairly cold like close to freezing.

I have a MYOG windscreen that also does some heat exchanging.

A Caldera Cone is pretty good because it directs the exhaust up the sides of the pot so more heat is absorbed.
