What do you think of the new L.L.Bean Microliight UL 1-Person Backpacking Tent (1lbs 14oz not 1lbs 4oz)?
Freestanding, 19 sq ft floor space. $299. I like the side entry door and the small footprint. Even lighter than the SMD Lunar Solo.

Something’s gotta give. Either the tent is small, or the weight doesn’t include the fly (or some other essential piece). My guess is this tent it really tiny. If so, kudos to them for making a nice silnylon tent for the solo traveler that isn’t very tall. I’m sure it could work really well for some (just not for me).
That’s a cool little tent. Â The peak height is a little short at 31″. Â At 6’4″ I think I would be a little tight.
that may well be 31″ peak on the outside … so loose an inch or two on the inside
its basically a one man bivy tent … now its likely more liveable than a pure bivy, but its looks pretty small
it is impressive that LL bean can get something down to that weight however (likely doesnt include guylines, sack and stakes) … especially as it looks to be freestanding and double (mesh) walled
;)
1-Man bivy pretty well describes it.
The weight seems a little off. It’s listed as ” minimum weight” 1 lb 4 oz which is half a pound lighter than my notch but has more floor space based on those dimensions.
It is perhaps telling that it is for “the dedicated backcountry adventurer.”
But that’s us, right?
The 7’6″ total length would leave 9″ of length beyond top and bottom of a 72″ pad – head and feet will probably press against the fabric unless you’re short. I wonder if the “minimum weight” does not include the fly? Probably not seam sealed (add two ounces there), plus 5 stakes (2 oz), extra guylines and two extra stakes (1 oz), and maybe a small polycro groundsheet (0.75 oz).
its ll bean .. itll be seam taped ….
you can always send em an email
but my suspicion is that its the inner, fly and pole for that weight …
so whos going to email em?
;)
Looking at how they list the specs for some of their other tents, it looks like this weight would include everything except stakes and stuff sack.
im looking at it at microlight 2 … and it weights 2 lb 11 oz …

even working out the weights the DAC (featherlite) poles itself will likely weight 200g+, the inner at least 200-300g+ and the fly 200-300g+ as well

i think theres an error somewhere …
note that the new mec UL spark 1 … a VERY similar design (with a 15D fly as well), though a tad larger weights 1.16 KG (2 lb 8 oz)

http://www.mec.ca/product/5036-963/mec-spark-ul-1-tent/
my feeling is that its supposed to be 2 lb 4 oz for the microlight 1
anyone want to send em that email?
;)
I like both designs. Good for someone who “must” have a freestanding UL solo tent.
Yep, the numbers don’t add up. How is it less than half the weight of the 2 when the only differences are slightly longer poles and a teensy bit more of that superlight material?
With this kind of tent folks just usually get a 2-person and it ends up being “comfortable for 1”. Nice to be able to bring gear inside and have half a shot at boiling water under a vestibule in crappy weather, and still have room left over to change your mind. :^)
Perhaps the OP is 5’5″ tall and 120lb, in which case I take all that back. Small people are lucky having so many more options than big people.
I got an e-mail back from Lorraine at LL Bean regarding the Microlight 1 person tent.
“The weight of the tent along with fly, pole, stakes and stuff sack is 2 lbs 4 oz.”
I have an older Microlight (about 3 years old) and can attest that it is coffin sized on the interior. I loved the side entry, and the vestibule works great for placing a pack, but the weight of the tent was heavier than my Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 2 and so I switched to that since I’d have more interior space and a lighter package.
It sounds like LL Bean has started using lighter materials, but unless they’ve changed the interior dimensions it’s not going to work for tall people. I am 5’5″ and found the tent adequate for my height.
DENA!!!! Â Glad to have you back!
I just got off the phone with L.L.Bean customer support. Yes, the 1lbs 4oz is a typo on their website. The minimum weight is 1lbs 14oz. Made the edit top of thread. The collective mind knew better ;)
Jennifer Mitol- Thank you. :)
