has anyone knocked out some of the 14ers while doing the JMT? I start August 28th SOBO and would like to knock out some of the 14ers along the way. Any recommendations?

I have and have used the guide to Colorado’s 14er’s.  I checked Amazon for a similar California book.  There is one:

but most readers pan it as ridiculously lacking in details.  The few exceptions rave about it, give it 5 stars, find no faults at all in it, but have reviewed only that one book on Amazon (i.e. clearly are someone trying to pump up the ratings for that particular book).

So other than providing a list of the 14er’s, the most basic information, and where to park, I’m not sure it would be very helpful.

are you asking for recommendations on which peaks to bag ?

that’s totally up to you, but depends a bit on your skill level and willingness to divert from the JMT.

Mt Sill is definitely a top candidate, and goes at class 2+ or class 3.

other Palisades peaks are options also.

a good reference is the R.J. Secor book The High Sierra.

I’m comfortable with doing class 3 climbs. I know the palisades are out of my zone for now.

Mike – great question. We’re planning to hike Split Mountain on our SOBO JMT starting Aug 23, if the timing and weather work out. It sounds like Split is perhaps the easiest 14’er besides Whitney, plus it’s pretty close to the JMT with good camping underneath. Here’s a detailed trip report we found:
