Will that be too much snow? Considering the snow condition in CO this year.
much appreciated.
May 23, 2017 at 10:57 pm #3469491July 4th in the high mountains of CO usually has means some good sized snowfields in the upper basins and passes, but trails are mostly open to treeline and higher in places. With this year’s late snow, things may be longer than usual melting out though. Early July is typically a good time of year if you like dry approach trails along with a good assortment of snowfields up high on the peaks and passes, provided you have an ice axe and traction on your feet and know how to use them safely.
May 24, 2017 at 6:19 am #3469508Thanks! is there any other places are less snow and not require ice axe and traction for 2-4 days backpacking around that time near CO?
May 24, 2017 at 9:12 am #3469532You have many options. Look for trails that don’t go over high passes. Or look for passes that are low angle so that snow is easy to cross without an axe. And have backup plans in the area on lower trails in case things look snowier than you like once you arrive. For example, if there’s a ton of snow up high, maybe 4 days of enjoyable day hiking with a light pack would do you well, especially if you don’t have a few days to acclimatize to the altitude before beginning your backpack. I would suggest reading some good guidebooks on the area to get a feel for what’s involved and what your options are.
