    Hi all,

I’m planning to hike the Laugavegur Trail in Iceland in late August/early September, with one friend.  I’d generally be inclined to bring my Duomid along for weight and wind-worthiness, but I’m a bit concerned about pitching problems – several posts online have suggested that the rocks and sand in parts of Iceland might require a freestanding tent.  There’s also some talk about blowing dust/sand, and the utility of a fully enclosed tent on that score.  Can anyone who has hiked the trail offer insights?  My only other decent tent is an REI half dome, which seems unnecessarily heavy…  Thanks!

Manfred wrote up his Father-Daughter Iceland trip inducing pics of his (guyed out) tent and tents other people had that failed.  He did the first portion with his 14-year-old, then sped up for the rest of the 440 miles.

The conditions along the trail can change pretty quickly.  The most important thing is to bring a GPS as Cairns can be difficult to find and there can be many side trails along the way (as well as white out conditions).  The first night we ended up camping on snow, but there were plenty of rocks to help stake out the tent.  The rest of there were pretty good places to stake out a tent.  We did not experience much wind but as I said, conditions can vary a lot.  If you hike from Porsmark to Skogafell and plan to stay overnight, you will need to reserve a room as they do not want people camping in a tent at the summit.

    Have fun
