I miss the old BPL…

Print media, especially magazines, is dying. Just as Internet Forums are facing stiff competition from other social media; print faces even greater competition from the Internet.

The big, famous magazines do charge large amounts for advertising, but keep in mind that they have huge paid staff, buildings and equipment, expensive printing costs, and of course distributing the final product to thousands and thousands of outlets each month.

Even though I have been paid for published articles in newspapers and magazines, I am no longer a fan as a reader. I much prefer to read on my iPad or laptop. I can store thousands of articles on each. Often if I see an interesting article on the Web and don’t have time to read it, I save it to my iPad or laptop. I only purchase books if they are not available in Kindle or another eBook format. I like that I can store my entire library on both my iPad and laptop. Plus I can easily search, look up word definitions, and copy quotes using electronic media. I have over 300 books in electronic form.

Given that I am an old curmudgeonly, stuck in tradition, 60 something person who has embraced this, younger people are more likely to do the same. I haven’t subscribed to newsprint or magazines in years, with one exception. Last year I had some articles published in a magazine (both online & print) and I had to purchase a subscription to read my own work in print.

The old BPL was an infinitely better format and website in my opinion.  There were more in-depth discussions.  Sometimes, things should be left  alone.

I like the new BPL.   It reminds me of the early days of the Internet.    The huge lag lets me appreciate each page loading, like the arrival of the postman in Olden times.   Every click on BPL is a miniature experience of waiting for a letter to be delivered !

Hi Clue

Would you like the lag increased? I am sure we could …

Cheers

I think the lag is fine and offers many options to enhance the experience.

Maybe there could be options to play a teletype sound to simulate hot news coming over the wire.

An option to play horse sounds could revive memories of the pony express delivery system.

maybe there could be a Mars mode where the loading delays are even longer, and we can pretend we are keeping in touch with the Earth colony.

Speed of the forum seems fine to me.  I have have not noticed any significant lag, but I have a fast connection.  I had just assumed that the lack of participation was due to winter…
