Oh, and we put ductwork insulation like we use to make cozies on the handles to reduce the chance of burns. They know to use bandannas.

Even better is silicone tubing threaded onto each handle – if you can. This stuff is often available at aquarium shops and eBay of course.
Cheers
Jul 26, 2019 at 1:31 pm #3603531We went through three 8-ounce (medium size) canisters during our trek. Used the Optimus Vega stove. Highly recommend this stove. It worked great. Only boil 3-4 quarts of water for dinner. You can use what’s left and then add cold water for doing the dishes.
Also, they sell canisters at these camps (per the Tooth of Time customer service): Cimarroncito, Philips Junction, Baldy Town, Ponil, Rich Cabins, Miners Park, Ring Place, and Apache Springs. We bought a four-ounce at Apache as insurance, but didn’t need it. Cito sells 8-ouncers.
We had to take the 8-quart pots. Philmont has very few of the 6-quart and would not give us one since we had 11 crew members. It worked fine, as we had practiced with two 8-quart pots for a week in the Smokies. People can easily stuff their own gear in the pot and then put it in their backpack. Don’t hang it on the outside – rookie move doing that.
Jul 26, 2019 at 1:38 pm #3603533We had to tell 1 crew member he couldn’t go due to a medical issue (that sucked!) and we’re down to 9.
I’m bringing two 6 quart pots to use. Really, as has been proven, the Philmont way can be done in 1 pot. No turkey bags and patrol method approved.
Good to hear about the canister usage. We’ll get the 3 to start plus I’ll get one for our coffee.
Thanks! Flying out tomorrow.
Jul 26, 2019 at 4:09 pm #3603548Yes, that’s what we did. One advisor brought a Jetboil and separate 4-ounce canister for just that.
Honestly, we only made hot coffee like 3 or 4 times because we just had to be moving fast in the morning. Otherwise just made cold coffee with Starbucks Via.
Sorry to hear about the medical condition. That is disappointing!
