I remembered how well the Houdini worked for me years ago but now I’m reading the houdini isnt any good anymore. I ordered 2, one for me and one for my son. Should I return them?

Its not as breathable as it was-current iteration is around 5cfm. I will say for me it’s one of the most useful pieces. It can take me down to 20’s while hiking, packs up to a small ball, weighs very little. I only wish it had pit zips-I may have someone add these.
The Houdini Air is excellent and balances breathability and wind protection well, though it fits a bit looser than the vanilla Houdini.
Love my Houdini. I even have the pants.
In this BPL interview, Steve Seeber makes a distinction between breathability or MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate) in grams/m2/24 hours, and air permeability, frequently expressed as CFM/ft2. Sometimes a high MVTR garment has high air permeability and vice versa.
He also said:
A wind shirt [like the Houdini] should be used to keep the wind off. And if you are going to use it for keeping cool, then you’ve got too much on.
My many-year-old Houdini still goes on every trip with me, used in combination with other layers, and opened or removed as needed. Especially if I get sweaty.
A drop in air permeability wouldn’t bother me. Lower MVTR might mean opening it up or taking it off sooner. Some specs can change without big changes in functionality.
