I think it would be really funny if HMG drops about a dozen black shells in a couple weeks.

Timmer does custom made to order DCF jackets to your measurements and features you want for a lot less than HMG.

I have one of Dan T’s DCF anoraks.
We all know but it’s worth mentioning again that we’re talking about totally different fabrics, here.
The DCF that Dan uses has no membrane and is completely impermeable to wind and water(vapor).
If your focus is on staying warm while moving, not dry, at a minimum weight, this will do it.

If I were ordering today I’d prefer the silpoly version, which wasn’t available when I ordered.
DCF just isn’t well suited for this kind of application.

I’d still much prefer a jacket made with a material that has high MVTR, doesn’t wet out, is relatively durable, and is easy to repair (i.e., the promise on paper of The Shell).

Why? Pinholes? Durability? Packed size? Cost?

The mylar-backed version of DCF is not a supple material. It’s not as much fun to wear as siliconized woven fabrics like silnylon or silpoly, doesn’t look as good, is noisier, and it is prone to develop holes that affect waterproofness.
The higher cost isn’t very much fun, either.
In terms of packed size, Dan’s DCF anorak is hardly bulky. It definitely has its place in my three season kit but given the choice I’d opt for silpoly instead, hands down.
