I’m planning to spend a month or two in northern India (Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand) with my girlfriend, and would like to do as much hiking (both day hikes and multi-day trips) as possible while we are there. After that we will be traveling around the rest of India and maybe some other countries for another month or two or three. So any hiking-specific gear I bring with me I’ll have to lug around well after the hiking part of the trip is over, or ship it back to the U.S.
I’ve started researching the area: got the Lonely Planet books, did some googling, and looked over past BPL threads on hiking in India and Nepal. But I still have a quite a few questions, so figured I would see if any of you had the answers. And of course I’d also greatly appreciate any general advice on hiking and traveling in the area!
Here are a few of the things I’m wondering:
- Is it worth trying to do hikes on my own, or should I hire guides? (Maybe it depends on the area/hike?) I’ve been on guided trips before and all else equal much prefer hiking on my own, but in this situation it seems there are lots of benefits to hiring guides — such as cultural integration, help with navigation, and just making the trip less stressful.
- On a related note, is it worth bringing my own stove and pot? (I would just bring a light alcohol stove and titanium pot.) I get the impression that guiding companies offer cooking as an add-on. And as long as that’s affordable enough, it may be the easier option. My caldera cone set-up is pretty compact, but I’d rather not have to bring it with me if I don’t have to.
- Do you recommend doing homestays on hiking trips? I’m partial to sleeping in a tent since sleeping outside is one of the things I like about multi-day hiking trips. And sleeping in some stranger’s house for one night when I don’t speak their language sounds potentially weird. But who knows, maybe it is a really cool experience and fosters cross-cultural understanding??
- Most importantly… Any recommended hikes?
I’m sure I will have more questions, but that’s it for now. Thanks in advance for any advice!!!! –Stephen
