Help me turn my Klymit Stash 18 into my 1-2 night pack

So, I received one of those Massdrop gift boxes because a bunch of my referrals made purchases on Massdrop. In the box was a Klymit Stash 18 daypack, which I am currently using as my gym bag. I was thinking this would be a good “template” for putting together a ‘stupid light’ 1-2 night pack. The gear I currently have goes comfortably in my Exos 58, but there is no chance it will fit in the Stash 18. Yes, I tried.

Here is what I attempted: https://www.geargrams.com/list?id=29011

So, here is my question: what gear could I replace in this list to fit in this pack? The common way to go about backpacking is that the pack is the last thing you buy in order to fit your gear. Let’s do the opposite. What gear do I need in order to have an 18L weekend pack? Obviously the amount of space taken up is more important here than the weight of items.

What jumps out at me is the Frogg Toggs and Rainbow. Replace the suit with a prepackaged plastic emergency poncho (assuming you’ve checked the forecast and are 95% sure it won’t rain). If your Rainbow is anything like my Contrail, it’s one of the largest things in the pack. I recently purchased a Trekkertent Stealth made from 20d silpoly. It’s basically a two piece Protrail. Packed, it takes up nearly a third of the space that the contrail did. That silpoly packs down really small. Also, do you need S2S cup? Hope that helps…..

Good tips on the poncho and Trekkertent! The S2S cup sit in the bottom of my Imusa mug, so it effectively takes up no space. My cook kit is a place I think I will need to slim down. It isn’t heavy, but the Imusa + reflectix cozy does take up space. I am wondering if a no-cook set up with a PB jar would be a better option for me here. Or maybe esbit with a really narrow pot?

I daydream of a similar challenge with my MLD Newt original.

Definitely would want multi-use gear, and stuff that nests together and is smallest version available.

Gatewood cape (tarp and raingear)

MLD Ti mug with tiny esbit stove nested inside.

Therm-a-rest z-lite lashed to outside.

If your Imusa is the 12cm try the 10cm. It’s much smaller. Try lowing the cozy too. I never use them and my food ends up cooked and warm enough.

Not so hard for mid-summer stuff. Insulation is the challenge. A really light quilt and a Prolite small pad cut a lot of bulk and an insulated vest vs a jacket. I would definitely use my Gatewood. My small cook kit uses a 450ml mug with an Esbit wing stove and a folding Ti spoon, foil windscreen and top.

I’ve done this dance several times over the years and came to the conclusion that a 25 liter pack makes the goal easier to hit. That extra bit of space makes a huge difference. That’s why I though the Exped Summit Lite 25 was so good.
