I will say that my last two trips, both meet-ups with BPLers, were great. Everybody just knows that you bring your own gear, everyone can hike at their own pace to get a predetermined campsite and nobody gets mad or has hurt feelings. Really nice.

Now you’ve done it David … I guess I need to stop reading BPL while eating. Anyone know how to Cajun Gumbo out of a keyboard?
Jan 9, 2017 at 11:46 pm #3444209. So while I’d tell her to take care of herself, I’d think many off you BPL folks would say of course you should pitch in and help each other out.
I’m still going with the “Why was she allowed on the trip in the first place” theory. :)
To quote Cactus Ed: “Life is too short for grief. Or regret. Or bullsh**. ”
Jan 10, 2017 at 3:07 pm #3444344this thread is great.
Everyone replied to the bailout email but the know-it-all in question. I actually haven’t heard from her since Sunday.
I was very clear about the mileage, elevation, water challenges (yes, we are doing the outer mountain loop – should be a great year with all the rain we’ve had), and temperatures (80s this weekend). The noobs were nervous but excited, my JMT partner said “bring it on…”, and no word from the other.
Yeah PMags, I know…I really should have been stronger and said no. But she is friends with one of the noobs, and I had a moment of weakness. But I do like to hike alone (without radios…) so hopefully I won’t really have to deal with this very much at all. I’m not worried about her safety – she’s strong enough to hump 60#s…she’ll just be quietly miserable about it.
As you all have said, it should make for a great TR. I’ll be happy to share ;)
Jan 10, 2017 at 3:23 pm #3444346I’d love to read the bailout email.
Jan 10, 2017 at 4:18 pm #3444356Can I get an invite? I promise to be relatively quiet during the hike and I’ll carry my own gear.
Jan 10, 2017 at 5:17 pm #3444367Finally! A BPL thread that is worth reading again! A year ago I was checking BPL multiple times a day and, because I’m not looking to buy any gear, I now check every couple of days.
Good luck Jennifer…From what I’ve seen from your posts over the years I’m confident you have the personality to make the trip a positive experience for all of those you care about without blatantly offending the “Trad.”
I always take a luggage scale with me to the trailhead to weigh all packs (including food and water) just before we start. It might be a subtle way to send a message to the “Trad”.
Jan 10, 2017 at 5:36 pm #3444370I’m not worried about her safety – she’s strong enough to hump 60#s…she’ll just be quietly miserable about it.
It sounds like your problem is solved. If she is strong enough to do it safely, you should be fine.
I do like Kevin,s suggestion of the scale though as it may open her eyes when your pack is 1/3 of the weight of hers yet you are just as comfortable in camp.
Jan 14, 2017 at 9:14 am #3445074P.S. Tell us how it went!
Jan 14, 2017 at 9:53 am #3445082With social media nowadays it’s only a matter of time until she sees this thread. That might be one way of bringing her around to the BPL style…but not the way I would have done it.

It doesn’t like this is about saving her soul and converting her to the way, the truth, and the UL life religion. It’s about dealing with an obnoxious person who is toxic in a social group.
Jan 17, 2017 at 9:24 am #3445601Wow Jen, tough situation. I’m late to this show, but would still like to watch the ending!
Not much I can add except a couple of thoughts:
-whether the control freak goes or not, take something extra to share with the group to show you can still have a bit of luxury. Chocolate might be ideal.
-coming down laguna meadows with a 60lbf pack – OUCH!
Jan 17, 2017 at 9:50 am #3445608I’ve seen some photos. There was smiling. There was also an example of a poor water carry. Hurry up with the report Jen!
Jan 18, 2017 at 6:43 pm #3445922Yeah, I feel for you Jen.
I have had to backpack with a woman who was a good backpacker and reasonably UL but had a rattlesnake personality and thought nothing at cutting people down. By the third day in our Utah trip she had been pretty well excluded from polite conversation and began to get the drift of things.
By day 5 the actually tried to be nice – to no avail B/C we were all “snakebitten”. I feel this will likely happen to “Ms. Crossfit”, especially as she attempts to exert “control”.
Speaking of “control”, this reminds me of the joke, Q: “What do female lawyers use for birth control.” A: “Their personality.”
(Just repeating a joke my attorney daughters told me. ;o)

Jan 20, 2017 at 12:19 pm #3446237Waiting for Jen to post the update- would love to hear how it went!
Feb 8, 2017 at 7:22 pm #3449577I, too, an curious. How did it go?
Feb 8, 2017 at 7:29 pm #3449578They ate her. No posts since that trip…
Feb 9, 2017 at 5:09 am #3449614Sad. It shouldn’t come as a surprise though. You can work up a mighty appetite hauling a 60 pound pack through the mountains. She will be missed…
;)
Feb 9, 2017 at 8:29 am #3449632Don’t think she will post her pics here though she must have where some can see them, prob on facebook.
Feb 9, 2017 at 12:03 pm #3449706I’m going to take no eagerness to recount high drama as a good thing. Prolly went fine and now she’s got other stuff to do.
Feb 9, 2017 at 12:21 pm #3449711So much for fun at other’s expense.☹️
Feb 9, 2017 at 12:41 pm #3449723This thread is the reason I’ve been checking BPL daily. I’d be happy with any trip report, since I’m living vicariously through those of you who don’t live in the frozen north, drama or no drama. LOL
C’mon, Jen- let us know how the trip went!
Feb 14, 2017 at 1:21 pm #3450500and by the way – i do like Roger’s suggestion of making the route a bit tougher………
This girl is a crossfit coach and will never, ever quit. So I’ll enjoy watching her suffer a bit. And suffer she will with 60#s, 9L of water and who knows how much food/fuel/duct tape she’ll be bringing
Well, is it not possible she’ll get the last laugh? I mean, it does not sound like she’s not capable. You also mentioned being “…the slow fat one…”, so perhaps there’s some jealousy that she might be able to hump this gear like a champ? I’m not dogging on you, just saying; this seems to more about a clash of personalities than anything. Besides, if she is the known control freak around the office and you did agree, allow, her to tag along on your trip, suggests that maybe there is more to this story–office politics, perhaps–than you are letting on. You already mentioned a desire to watch her suffer, no?
Anyways, this does not seem to be about her choice of gear and/or its weight.
Feb 14, 2017 at 3:09 pm #3450511Clash of personalities??
They ATE Jen! That goes well beyond personalities clashing
