Giardia

I did something that maybe I shouldn’t have done on this weekend’s backpacking trip.

While I was filtering creek water from a CNOC bag, through the Sawyer Squeeze, into a Smart Water bottle I thought…. “I wonder if I could back flush right now by squeezing the smart water bottle, sending filtered water back into the dirty CNOC bag.”

Well, I did and just let go of the smart water bottle, allowing the water to go back to its normal course.

That was yesterday. Today on the hike out I started getting Diarrhea. After a couple doses of the anti D meds, I think it’s ok, maybe.

I didn’t eat anything out of the ordinary, so contaminated water is my best guess.

If what I did was a bad idea, maybe others (and myself) can learn from it.

You squeezed untreated water into smart water bottle, then backflushed it back to the unfiltered water, then squeezed the unfiltered water back to start water bottle, which you drank?

That should be okay.  Just don’t put unfiltered water directly into smart water bottle bypassing the filter.

Maybe you accidentally dripped some of the unfiltered water directly to smart water bottle.

You probably got diarrhea for some other reason.

If I’m understanding correctly, it doesn’t sound like you did anything that would cause contamination. Your GI problem may just have a different cause.

From Wikipedia: seems like next day symptoms are unlikely.

Giardiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Giardia duodenalis (also known as G. lambliaand G. intestinalis).[3] Infected individuals who experience symptoms (about 10% have no symptoms) may have diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss.[1] Less common symptoms include vomiting and blood in the stool.[1] Symptoms usually begin one to three weeks after exposure and, without treatment, may last two to six weeks or longer.[4]

Thanks all.

Yeah, I’ve begun to wonder if it was caused by something else.

Besides coming on so quickly, after two anti D tabs, followed by a third, the diarrhea stopped, and my stomach felt OK.

I wouldn’t think that would be the case with giardia.

My stomach feels a little funky today which isn’t normal for me. but could be related to what I had going on yesterday.

I knew I could get good info with your thoughts about pushing the filtered water back into the dirty water for a quick back flush.

If I understand you correctly, you filtered dirty water from your cnoc bag through your Sawyer filter into a smart bottle, and then squeezed that filtered water from the smart bottle back through the swayer and into the cnoc bag.  If that is what you did, it is entirely appropriate; you backflushed your Sawyer with filtered water.
Had you squeezed unfiltered water from your smart bottle through the Sawyer, you could have contaminated your Sawyer and your smart water bottle, and would be at risk for Giardia infection, but you shouldn’t expect symptoms before its incubation period.

From someone who has had giardia…..

I didn’t know I had it until I got a test from the doc.

Long time ago on a family vacation was trying to learn to water ski in the lake of the Ozarks, swallowed a ton of wate doing so. About 2 weeks after getting home had diarrhea non stop for 2 weeks even doing the BRAT diet and maxing out on Imodium…. Finally convinced doc for test, 2 Days on antibiotics and was cured.

If you had it anti d meds won’t take care of it, you need meds from the doc…

Thanks.

Yeah, I had giardia years ago from a trip to a Caribian island. We were very careful about the water, but lather decided it was likely from the salads we ate at the motel’s resturant that they probably washed in their cistren water.

What I had on this last trip didn’t last long, so it was something else.

I concur with Buck.  I have had giardia twice and both times it kicked into gear on the third day.  The first time I suffered for a week before going to the doctor and getting treated for it.  Fortunately I respond well to the antibiotics which do the trick after two to three days of treatment.

For the record:
Giardia is NOT bacterial. Giardia lamblia are protozoa. Antibiotics will have little to zero effect.

Giardia lamblia
The standard treatment for Giardia is quite different (and a bit horrible).

IF you were given antibiotics by a competent doctor and IF they worked, then you did NOT have Giardia. You had something else.

Cheers

American doctors use only the highest quality stainless steel drills when they drill you open to let out the evil spirits.

“For the record:

For decades, Flagyl (metronidazole) has been used to treat giardia (and entamoeba histolytica). Flagyl is an antibiotic (and an antiprotozoal).

Early on in this post, I had begun to believe the diarrhea was caused by something else.

Besides coming on so quickly, and after two anti D tabs, followed by a third, the diarrhea stopped, and my stomach felt OK.

The conclusion is that would not be the case with giardia.

Something else caused the diarrhea.
