I’m angry with GG of late because of the direction they are taking the gorilla backpack. Went from around 25oz in 2014 (great pack) to over 35oz with their latest version, terrible. They still even describe it as ultralight!

What does everyone think?

I was about to pull the trigger on the previous model when they replaced it with the current one. Pretty disappointed. I use the previous Murmur for 2-3 night hikes and longer in the summer and planned on using the previous Gorilla on a thru hike.  The new Gorilla doesn’t make it.

The previous one wasn’t too bad, a bit heavier than I’d like to see but still a solid bag. I just shake my head at the current model.

The linked thread is the one I started. At the same time I started a similar discussion in a supposed UL group on Facebook and basically got looked at like I had two heads. I don’t think people know how UL the old GG style packs were.

Makes me sad. I think the 2012 version was better than the others, although the over-the-top closure system was silly. And it looked sweet, too!

Kinda wish I had kept mine…

Indeed, the pendulum swings the other way now.  I have, and still use, the original GG Whisper, which was the precursor to the Murmur.  Made out of sail cloth, it weighed a mere 4 oz !

Yes, quite. I pretty much gave up on the new packs. As far as I am concerned, there is NO reason for a 2500ci pack to ever be more than 1 pound. Even my old Miniposa (around 3200ci) is 15oz. With minor repairs it is still in service after ten years. Unless there is some overriding need, there is little reason for a heavy pack. The old Mariposa was was around a pound and a half. The old G5 (spinnaker) was 5.2oz at 3800ci. The G5 (sil) was 6.7oz. The sil version is still in use after 9 years.

ZPacks, MLD, HMG and the rest all follow the same trend producing ~2 pound packs. I would rather put the extra pound in food (just about an extra day for me.)

Somebody really aught to start producing these small UL and SUL packs again.

There is one notable exception that I came across recently made by MLD called the BURN (38 L) weighing 12.5 oz.  It’s made of Dyneema (cuben?) and has no frame or hipbelt, which is of no concern to me, as I’m easily less than 15 lb for a two night weekend.  This one is certainly reminiscent of the early UL packs of a bygone era and only slightly heavier but more durable…spinnaker sail cloth was not noted for being durable!

When tax refund season comes around, I think I’ll score one instead of the HMG Windrider I’ve been looking at…both are about the same price.
