I’d love to hear your thoughts on how light we can go within some constraints.

We are 2 adults on the smaller side and one very rowdy toddler.

We want something double walled because we just aren’t comfy in a breezy tent. We usually put the fly on unless nights are hot.

Tent must hold up to our kid (18 months now) acting like a wild animal.

My husband really wants two doors.

And now that I’ve spelled out a bunch of factors that make a tent heavier, or I’d really like to keep it as light as I can within those limits because we are going to be carrying the toddler a lot of the time and that makes even a short hike pretty tough.

We’ll be using it some in the Sierras, some on local trips in the San Francisco bay area, and some for bike trips where we can end up in sites that are more car oriented (hard, gravelly).

How much I’m willing to spend depends a lot on exactly how much I gain by spending more (not going to pay hundreds more just to save a couple ounces). I’ve been browsing current sales and noticed some Big Agnes tents that looked promising and also some by Nemo, a brand with which I don’t have any familiarity.

Thank you for your thoughts!

While not strictly “freestanding,” my wife and I really like the Nemo Hornet 3p. Lighter than a true freestanding tent, while still storm worthy. Gobs of interior space.
