Hello everyone,
I am visiting CO in October, and I would really like to hike four pass loop. I have read that area can be hit or miss that time of year with regard to weather.
What kind of weather can I expect in CO at that time of year?
Also, I’m trying to decide if I need a good pair of shell pants to be prepared for snowy conditions. Any thoughts.
If conditions on four pass loop are not good then I would like some back up options.

October in the CO mountains is very hit-and-miss. You could encounter sun and no snow or wind, or you could find over a foot of snow and whiteout conditions. It seems like most Octobers you can do high hikes if you’re able to pick a good weather window and willing to travel through 3 or 4 inches of snow and deal with some slick rocky trails underneath. You’ll probably want warm and supportive footwear and gaiters. Trekking poles for slick, snowy trails helps too. And it could easily get into the teens at night, so a warm bag, clothes and tent are prudent.

You helped me answer my question if I should get some nice shell pants. I think I’m gonna go for it given the possibility of snowy conditions. I already have everything else covered as far as gear is concerned.
