Flat Tarp with Mesh Doors?

For many years, I was a flat tarp only kind of guy.  Maybe I’m getting older and less resilient, but in recent years the mosquitoes have started to bother me more (or maybe I’m just picking the “wrong”places to backpack).  Anyway, last year I purchased an HMG 8×10 flat tarp and an HMG Echo insert.  It worked pretty well on our trip to Rocky Mountain NP last summer.  But it was fairly tight for two people inside the insert.  And I kind of wish the flat tarp was slight larger, also.

As I think about it, what I really want is a flat tarp with doors — but mesh doors.  If I’m in places with out biting insects, I could simply unzip the mesh completely, and it turns into a standard flat tarp.  Something like this, maybe, but with mesh doors:

Does anybody know of a manufacturer that offers something like that, but with mesh doors?

I remember seeing a few companies (maybe one was Pa’lante?) experimenting with this in the last year or two, but nothing seems to be on the market. I’m sure some of the smaller tarp makers would do it as a custom order.

Back in the day bug skirt netting seemed to be reasonably common on certain shelters – six moon designs did it on the deschutes, MLD used to offer it for mids (may still as a custom), and the zpacks hexamid takes that idea further with the mesh floor.

I guess it’s dropped away in popularity as lighter designs and fabrics become more ubiquitous, so for minor weight gain you have something easier, more functional as bug protection and less likely to get damaged than mesh hanging on the ground (from abrasion or from getting frozen and ripped in colder weather).

Anyway, I suspect you’d need to DIY or ask a cottage company who is small enough to still handle custom requests.

That would be super easy to make. I’d not make mash removable, it would cost you more zipper weight. Just leave the mesh attached and roll them back when you don’t need it.
I’d be happy to make something for you if I didn’t have other projects on my plate right now. If you don’t need anything right away, PM me and I am happy to chat.

Thanks for the replies!  Mole J, thanks for the link to the Oware net tarps!  At first glance this is even better than I was thinking, as I was only thinking of netting on the ends, with the idea that if bugs were really bad, I would simply pitch the sides touching  the ground.  But this netting all the way around seems even better.  I think I will give them a call.
