I’ve been playing around with a number of trail baking systems using Esbit, and am trying to find an esbitmizer to evaluate its simmering capabilities.  Does anyone know where I might buy one?

I’ve been baking/simmering with hexamine for a few years.  I use the Flat Cat Gear  Epicurean Stove with Coughlan’s fuel tablets.  While your browsing the Fat Cat Gear Site click on the link to the Backpacker’s Cookbook to learn some of the possibilities of esbit simmering.

The Coughlan tablets are a lot cheaper than the Esbit brand and perfect in size for a solo meal.  The Epicurean will work fine for both.   Besides baking muffins, pizza etc. I simmer commercial meals such as Knorr Sides plus dehydrated meals of my own making.  I find simmering makes makes meals a whole lot tastier than simple rehydrating in a bag.

Worth mentioning is that I use the epicurean with my 500ml titanium pot without the usual baking pan when I’m simmering regular meals.  I rarely have anything stick to the pot using this system.

As w/ Don, I’ve got the Flat Cat Gear Ti Epicurean and have done a lot of baking w/ it. It’s an awesome esbit stove, and w/ the proper pan setup, does a GREAT job baking. Hadn’t ever seen an esbitmizer but the fact that it isn’t around anymore makes me think there were issues that came up once people started using it. Good luck on your search!

Thanks for the replies.  I have had Flat Cat gear for years and love it.  I recently bought a new epicurean along with a bob cat screen and stove system.  I’ve made many of the recipes in Jon’s online cookbook, and enjoy quite a few of them on the trail.  As things currently stand, I’m planning to take the bob cat system on my thru hike next year.  The previous years I’ve used a Snow Peak titanium stove, and found it great for most cooking, but a challenge for true baking.

I was looking for an esbitmizer to compare simmer heat outputs in a controlled fashion.  I have a setup to measure relative heat output and loss in a baking system, and thought the esbitmizer would allow me to carefully change the amount of air reaching the tablet.  My goal is to basically calibrate my baking system temperatures and fuel usage parameters (the scientist in me shows!). I’ll try contacting Dan to see if he has any left for sale.

Esbitmiser, see how it simmers so nice because of air intake holes:
