I want to share my experience.  My first EE enigma was a 30 deg.  I was cold at 35 deg.  Got a 20 deg next and at 28 deg, its cold.  I’ve never had this big of a advertised temp vs comfort temp with other bags/quilts.  These were products from 3 years ago so things might have changed.

Got a 10 deg from zpacks and it is warm down to 10 deg.  Wife got one also but stopped tripping with me due to heart surgery.

When I was looking to replace my EE 10 degree quilt, I compared how the makers rate their quilts based on the quilt’s single side loft.  The 10 degree EE quilts have 3 inches of loft.  The 15 degree Katabatic quilts have 3.25 inches of loft.

Thanks Brian. Sorry that your wife can’t join you anymore.

I guess EE has done some refinements over the last few years but I’m leaning toward going with a quilt from another company now. Katabatic seems to have a good following and after your comments I’ll also check out Zpacks

Just throwing it out there – Differential cut is one thing that makes Katabatic, Nunutak, and now Warbonnet different from the pack (am I forgetting anyone else?). I just ordered Warb quilts with Diff cut because they are substantially cheaper than the (kick ass) diff cut alternatives and I have been very happy with other Warb gear.

Id add a Warbonett Diamondback quilt to your consideration as well. (They also offer ETC and draft collars which will make a quilt less drafty compared to those lacking these features)

To me, 2.5in loft is not 20* comfort rated nor is 3in 10* unless you have Gryffon Gear style (160%) overstuff (which essentially leads to extra loft by pushing on the baffles so much). The Katabatic or Nunutak loft:temp ratio is much closer to comfort vs everyone else who uses the 1.5in @ 40* + 0.5in per 10* beyond that. The typical scale is only comfort if Im wearing my down jacket, pants, and booties, but that is not a comfort rating IMO if I have to wear all my gear to bed. This applies more to sub 30* temps vs 40 or 50*.

I’ve had my EE for ten years . It was a good bit cheaper than a Katabatic. At least back then.
Consider the temperature range you’ll use it in. A 10 or 20 degree quilt in maybe 30* weather will be comfortable even if it’s a bit overrated. The 10* being perhaps a little more comfortable.
I’m not replacing my 20*. I don’t want to rag on EE. They’re good quilts at a good price. Quality company. I’m very happy with it. If I had the money, I would have bought a Katabatic, the HMG quilts are looking nice, but I have no regrets.

Anyone have any experience with, or thoughts on, Western Mountaineering’s quilt offerings?
