Wow!!! Years of purchases from ZPacks, several thousands of dollars spent for packs, shelters and accessories. Now putting a new order for two packs with add-ons totalling in $1100. I asked to put a piece of cardboard in the opening of the box right under the place where you cut the tape when unboxing and stickers…

A month ago I received HMG Ultamid 4 with mesh insert and floor and to my surprise I found that the box was opened and resealed (presumably by customs). To a greater amusement I found that seven of the layers of the tent canopy were cut through. Holy crap!! I spent $1400 for the tent! HMG provided a repair for free. The cut was done on the side where there were no stickers warning from using sharp blades. HMG put these stickers on the top side of box, but not on the bottom side of it. I told them that it is better to put stickers on both sides because there is no guarantee that the box will be opened from top side. Another thing that could help is cardboard insert, so the fabrics will not be cut through.

Explained this to Amber, a service representative at ZPacks…. Ok they didn’t want to ditch the hydration opening on a pack – no customizations AT ALL. But what a heck they cannot fulfill the request to put a piece of f***ing cardboard and put stickers on both sides??? Am I really asking for something unbearable??

They got bigger.
I’ve seen lots of people dis-satisfied with Z-Packs customer service in the past six months to a year. I haven’t experienced any myself as I haven’t needed any customer support assistance.
I’m not sure I’d pin that on crappy customer service, per se. It could be that the customer service reps simply aren’t given the latitude to do ‘easy’ things to satisfy customers (not unusual). I don’t know if that’s the case, but wouldn’t doubt it.
Personally, I think that adding a piece of cardboard at the top and bottom openings to such packages is a smart thing to do, which Tarptent does automatically (at least they did for my most recent purchase).
@ Doug: “It could be that the customer service reps simply aren’t given the latitude to do ‘easy’ things to satisfy customers (not unusual).”
– Which most of us colloquially call “crappy customer service”.
Seems to me the decent thing to do would be to contact Joe before posting a Yelp! type review here. I mean, you and he are old pals, right?
Thanks for posting this here – I (as i’m sure many other BPLers) appreciate hearing both the good and the bad to make informed decisions.
If you guys ever run into these issues with my customer service, they do happen, pm me so we can sort it out

Joe has most likely left for Scotland,, I know he ls doing the TGO Challenge this year May 10th thru the 24th
I was given a reason for why it is impossible for them to fulfill this request. It is because they now have a semi-autonomous packaging system. They even do not install add-ons on packs anymore! They simply pack everything and ship. Imagine ZPacks factory as a high-end fully autonomous facility with robots from Boston Dynamics who assemble each order, pack and send. And all of the products are constantly made 24/7.
Maybe this is an exaggeration, but I can’t understand how semi-autonomous packaging can prevent you from putting cardboard inserts and stickers. Sorry, Joe, I don’t buy this. There are exceptions from rules and I think, that I gave a reasonable explanation to why I need the things done as I said.
Tim, thank you for posting here. I have EE quilt I bought years ago from you. I think that waterfalling this message to your customer reps is a good thing to do. If I was ordering quilts today, I was asking for the same packaging “upgrade”. When we have our packages passing through customs, it sometimes ends in damaged products. Unfortunately, it happened to me twice.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to just use a larger box with some padding and/or a secondary box inside? Stickers are generally ignored in shipping.
I don’t know what shipping system ZPacks is using but generally the larger the box the more expensive it is to send.
Don’t cut labels weigh nothing.
I know the bigger box is more expensive, but adding stickers is generally useless, as the shippers ignore them completely.
Problem is not the shipper. People opening packages with sharp unneeded objects is the problem. Boxes can be printed with warnings galore and it won’t cure stupid. It is an unfortunate thing sure. And hey we’ve have had threads on even less important things. Check out Chaff.
