Commercial yogurt powder–live culture in it?

I am experimenting with breakfast smoothies for the trail.  Found a couple of options on a search of this forum, which helped me get started.  Now the project is to figure out a mix we like.  Some recipes call for “yogurt powder” and the packitgourmet smoothie ingredient lists have it too.  So my question is, does the unsweetened yogurt powder offered by various internet sources, tend to have live cultures, or is it used only for flavor?

I guess I could consider making fresh yogurt on the trail, as described in this forum, but just packing up smoothie mix with the yogurt powder in it is the current project.

Other ingredients I’m using are vanilla rice protein powder (because my husband likes it), Nido, and some freeze-dried fruits (blueberries, strawberries, bananas) I found at Trader Joe’s.

You can buy a powder yogurt starter culture.  It has live culture, they just need to be re-hydrated.

So get some yogurt powder for the substance/flavor and then get some packets of the starter culture to mix in too?  I hadn’t thought of doing that.  Thanks!

HORIZION YOGURT MIXBERRY BURST – SUPER SQUEEZE 100cal/pouch (3.9oz)

Looks interesting.  Especially for hikes (like sometimes in west Texas) when we are carrying all our water anyway so it doesn’t matter if some of it is already in the packaged food.  For this summer’s trip we’ll be in the Pacific Northwest with water on the land, so I am seeking mostly to carry food in dry forms.

Thanks!

You could always just take capsules of beneficial flora with you — there are lots of brands on the market. Check your local health food store or Whole Foods. :-)

Another good idea!  Thanks!
