On a related note, I heard a (possibly apocryphal) anecdote of a woman arguing with TSA screeners who were confiscating her bottle of ice.    “But it’s not a liquid!”

I highly doubt that would be allowed, but as a side I had one of those years ago when it was sold here at on BPL and I would not call it safe! I was cutting a small zip tie (and was being careful ) and sliced right through two of my fingers it was a bloody mess I never experienced that with a knife I use THIS KNIFE  at .4 oz (it would not be allowed in the cabin on a flight either) or box cutter and promptly through them away not worth it to me.

Saw no ski poles – assuming same thing as hiking poles – I may just check in the backpacking

Unfortunately, they won’t let you take hiking poles.  Years ago, I tried covering the carbide tip with plastic, but they pointed out the carbide tip that appeared on scanner under the rubber cap.

Yes, people think if they freeze the water bottle it is not a liquid and can be carried on.

That’s because it’s explicitly allowed by the TSA

I do it all the time. Occasionally a TSA agent raises an eyebrow, but they’re always quickly educated by a peer or superior.

That’s interesting, thanks.   I was vaguely wondering if there was some justification for it, based upon whatever explosive liquids they are concerned about having a much lower freezing point, or just looking obviously different from ice when in solid form.   But I have no clear idea just what liquids they are worried about.   And certainly I assumed that the TSA would take the most conservative approach possible, rather than actually trying to accommodate normal travelers.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>If you don’t want to check a bag just stop at a Walmart or large gas station.  You should be able to find a knife for $10 or less.</p>

Sure.

Go for it.

Will probably need to insert it into a convenient body cavity however.

Always wondered how that finger-slicing design got named “Derma-Safe.” Creative marketing indeed!

Horrible – decided on small nail clippers – I feel the pain. !

Ice is allowed, but you’ll probably be taken aside for inspection.  One of my scouts has diabetes and transported his insulin on the plane to/from Philmont in a Thermos with ice in it. His dad was with us and preemptively spoke to the TSA agent.

Yesterday in Sydney my wife had her cuticle scissors and nail scissors confiscated.  Neither had blades that were 3/4 of an inch long.  They had to bring in a supervisor to make the call.   Since she had flown about 30 times with those, she was not pleased….
