is it good for the entire year?
I was in Red Butte Wilderness and walked into California. I forget, maybe I made no fire, but was thinking about it and whether that would be illegal. No convenient place to get permit on the way to trailhead.
Yes, good all year. I got mine on January 2nd. But it is still subject to local regulations and restrictions—so you still have to check with the local office before you light the forest on fire.
BTW, you can also now buy your CA DFG fishing license online…
Thanks, Joe!

Yosemite NP – Wilderness Regulations
“Fires are permitted with a wilderness permit in wilderness areas, unless otherwise noted. No additional fire permit is needed.”
Can anyone reconcile this difference in policy?
The wilderness permit give you permission to make a fire, where and when it is legal, during your backpacking trip.
A CDF permit allows you to make a fire in a national forest or other area, where and when legal. So you can “disperse camp” in a national forest with a fire if you have one of these permits.
Thanks Paul.
We used to have a ritual of going to a ranger station before our first trip each year, which often limited when we left because of office hours. This is much better. I stick or in my kit and leave it there all year.
Paul, I think you need a fire permit in wilderness areas and BLM too, not just national forest land.
Joe,
From my post above: “Fires are permitted with a wilderness permit in wilderness areas, unless otherwise noted. No additional fire permit is needed.”
Why do you “…think you need a fire permit in wilderness areas … too …”?
I recall a ranger saying the wilderness permit also acted as the campfire permit for a trip. (This was the case for either Desolation or Yosemite.) However, the Forest Service website for the Trinity Alps says “Wilderness Permits and California State Campfire Permits are required for trips into this wilderness.”
It’s also possible to have the converse; a hike into a Wilderness area that didn’t require wilderness permit would still require a campfire permit if you wished to brew a cup of tea with your lunch.

Sorry Greg, didn’t read as closely as I should have.

Joe,
No big deal.
Obviously there is confusion from many quarters. I’m just trying to figure out what is really needed where.
Reading the reference above to the Trinity Wilderness makes me wonder if each the “Forests” and “Wildernesses” (sp ?) has a unique requirement.
