Without braces I tore each ankle twice severely in 4 separate events over several years, crutches for weeks (not counting 3 additional separate breaks and a torn plantar).  Also sprained them many times, out a few days each time.  Ever since I started wearing proper ankle braces, I haven’t had a single debilitating sprain in 10 years, and I haven’t slowed down my activity levels.  I’ve had many near misses playing hoops, tennis and backpacking that I’m sure would have side lined me in low runners, but the brace or boot gave me enough support and just that extra bit of time to course correct.

Both can be true: braces (and mid boots) work, and  strengthening ankles help.  Based on  physiology and amount of damage, my understanding through my doctors and physio is the exercise can only go so far.  In my case, mids and or braces are still needed.

When I see Steph Curry or Andy Murray wearing braces, I wonder if they’re getting bad advice?

Maybe David D hits the target: “in my case”.

This reminds me of my own comments from some time ago: you need to find out what suits YOUR feet. I should remember this more often.

Cheers

David D; thank you for your comments.

Sure, with enough exercise, muscles will develop.  You might be able to hike barefoot some day.  But what about in the meantime?  A mid that is protective of the ankles, and well fitted enough to NOT be floppy and slippery, is a boon, especially for those of us office workers who seldom can get out there for many weeks or months at a time. Love backpacking; but there are many other pastimes I love just as much; so make sure footwear fits snugly and stays put.
