Back on the trail after hip replacement surgery questions.

My wife has managed hip cartilage wear for 15 years though PT and exercise. Last month, it was time to pull the trigger and get her hip replaced. Today, we just went on our first 0.7-mile flat, dirt trail walk. My question to the forum is if any of you have gone through hip replacement surgery and if so, what was your recovery like? Were you able to get back to backpacking and if so, how long did it take? Finally, do you have any pearls of wisdom that you could pass on. Thanks in advance for your response.

HUGE congratulations to your wife!
No pearls of wisdom other than “persist”, or “don’t stop”.

Cheers

It’s so different person to person, but my husband has had both hips done and is very strong now.  He was doing 6 miles a day on a dirt road, up and down, about 3 months after surgery. He does have some residual pain but overall, is doing great. If you have a really good PT, tell them what you want to be able to do; they can guide you in training.

A friend/ walking partner had hers done a few years ago.

She trained up steadily. She was doing pretty steep day walks within 3 months (she was fit going into surgery).

She says it hardly bothers her at all. This Easter we did an 8 day walk together which included the Ducane Traverse (Tasmania)  – lots of boulders, climbing moves, some of it in the wet. Our knees were sore, her hip was fine 🙂.

Hope it goes well.

First of all, thank you for all of the feedback (replies and PM)!  Things are going well, PT is ramping up and that is very tiring , but in a good way.  Everyday things are getting easier and that along with your stories have been incredibly encouraging.  Back on the trails in the near future!

My wife had hip replacement at 49! She had some temporary reversals during her recovery, or I think it would have gone faster, but ultimately, she was back to full strength and fitness within about 2 years, doing everything she did previously except for running. Hiking, backpacking, skinning, skiing, cycling …

Patience and persistence will pay off, and most likely that hip will not be the limiting factor for her in the future.

Again, thanks everyone for the feedback.  The last post reminded me of a detail that I left out, my wife just turned 70 this year.  That being said, it has been 5 weeks since the surgery and we are walking every day: today, it was a simple stroll of about 1.4 miles but we are ramping up daily.  Thanks again everyone.
