Anyone have CASCDE MOUNTAIN TECH hiking poles?

A few months ago I bought a pair of Cascade Mountain Tech carbon fiber hiking poles at COSTCO. The were around $35. so I thought for that price I’d take a chance. After all, if they failed COSTCO stands behind them, at least for a year. (Yes, at this price they are “Made in China”.) Hence my thread title question.

The poles came surprisingly well equipped, especially at that price. They had: 1.) extended foam grips,  2.)carbide tips,  3.) rubber tip protector,  4.) larger “rocker” type tip protector, 5. both small baskets and larger snow baskets.

So far they have proven to be well designed and work well. I’ve removed the foam grips below the cork handles B/C I never use them and they were just extra weight. In their place I put a few wraps of Gorilla Tape on each pole.

Also, to cut down on wear on the adjusting cam-type clamps I try to leave them at my normal hiking  length as much as possible. The clamps are adjustable for tension.

If you have a pair of these poles please post on your experience with them.

I’ve had good experiences with them too.  They’ve been highly reviewed.  I know Skurka has a review of them.

I’ve had two pairs for several years – no problems.  Our Scout troop uses them a lot (and they are inexpensive!).

I had a pair for about a year, and I recently returned them.

The latches for each segment are made of plastic. There is a clamp around a plastic sleeve that clamps the lower pole segment. The plastic sleeve is held on by two small plastic tabs, and those tabs are all that hold the whole latch on the pole. On one of my poles, one of those tabs broke. If the second one broke, which it was more likely to do now that the other side was broken, the pole segment would have fallen out.

Since I rely on my poles to support my shelter, I decided I need more durable poles. If the latch had broken completely that wouldn’t necessarily have kept me from setting up my shelter, but if I had lost part of the pole or the plastic clamping sleeves then the poles would not have worked at all. Maybe some tape could hold them together in an emergency.

Besides that they were fine. They were about 14oz per pair with straps and no baskets. They were strong enough in compression, and the carbon never had any issues. They are fine for normal use if you’re not supporting a shelter with them.

I don’t need them but bought a pair anyway just to see for myself. From time to time I have parroted the recommendation to others, and now I can at least cite some personal experience.

Although I’ve used them for only 35-40 miles they seem pretty darn good for the price. The metal nuts embedded in plastic that secure the flicklock cam bolts look a bit suspect, however they will probably be okay for a long time if they are tightened down just enough to keep the sections from slipping, and it really doesn’t take a ton of friction to accomplish that.

I’ve also seen some discussion about rapid tip wear or the tungsten carbide bit slipping inside the aluminum jacket that holds it. I haven’t used them nearly enough to experience this.

Maybe the improvement of the search function will drastically cut the redundant queries.  ;^)

I got into the habit of going straight to google anyway when doing a BPL search. Maybe it’s going to be better when all the current bugs are worked out.

This website search engine doesn’t work for me at all. The page just reloads. I have to use yahoo or google to find anything.

Thanks Link. It may be because I am blocking some ads. That is fine with me. I would rather use yahoo search in that case.

I broke one when I fell on it sideways.  I don’t fault the pole though as I suspect I would have broken any CF pole and bent any aluminum one.

Edward, how old are yours and did you have any problems with them otherwise? How many miles on them and where do you use them? Are they the twist lock or the flick lock version?

I am always interested in anecdotal data points.   :^)

Thanks!

Maybe 1.5 years old, blue vs the current green ones at my local Costco.

Two winters of day hiking in the SoCal desert.  Somewhere between 300-500 miles in generally rough terrain.  I used them hard and they were pretty scratched up but I think they had lots of life left if I hadn’t fallen on one in a field of rocks.  It broke right in the middle of the center section.

Flick locks.  The locks look flimsy but I never had any problems.  Just tighten them 1/4 turn if they start slipping.
