Hi all,

I’m looking for a “new” sewing machine and I found some nice options. I’m in the Netherlands so some brands are harder to find here.

I found these

Pfaff 1222E serviced but the decorative stitches don’t work ( a bit abive budget)

Singer 401

Necchi supernova and a lycia

Elna Su 62c

Any thoughts on these?

Many MYOG folks are fond of the Singer 401 as a sturdy home machine that has lots of used parts on the market if needed.

Technically, any of these machines should serve you well for typical MYOG stuff (I have an Elna Supermatic, among other, and I’m very happy with it).

Personally, I would stay clear of the Pfaff just because a serviced machine that still has problems spells trouble. I don’t have an opinion on the Singer which is probably great but looks a little more complicated than what I’m comfortable opening up for cleaning, tuning or repairs. One thing you should be aware of, some of these machines (e.g. the Elna for sure, possibly some of the Necchis) need a special cam for a zigzag stitch so you should make sure that it does come with the machine. Speaking of zig-zag, some of the Supernovas were straight-stitch only so you have to identify the precise model. Flat bed machines are fine but I like a free arm which is useful if you are making or modding clothing.

In a perfect world, it really is better to buy a machine that you can inspect.

I think I’ll go for the elna, I saw some good reviews on YouTube for it and it’s fully restored and runs very smooth. It’s with all the cams and accessories.

Thanks for the tips!

Swiss engineering is always a good choice! ;-)

The only thing to watch out for with the Elna is to make sure to declutch the motor when you put it in  storage so you don’t get flats on the hard rubber pulley. If it does have flats, the sewing machine will make as much noise as a helicopter. As for the cams, mine came with just the basic cams but the only one I have ever used is the one for zig-zag stitching as I don’t have any use for the others.

I’ve wanted to start dabbling in some easy MYOG projects. My wife has a Brother XL-5130 sewing machine. Is that an appropriate for starting out?

It should be fine.To be honest, any sewing machine will be fine for stuff sacks, pouches and the like or for modifying clothing which is what you typically start with. The XL-5130 appears to be a simple machine that should be fine. Something more powerful might be better for making packs and items that need sewing multiple layers but you’ll have plenty of time to get your own machine if you feel the need.
