Hey guys/gals!

Wow, this place is still up and kicking! Amazing. I was here over ten years ago a lot, then came a baby, who’s now not so babylike etc and man does it feel weird / great to be back! Excited to see what’s changed in that period!

Anywho, I’m camping out with my (now) ten year old daughter and wanted to introduce tarp camping to her for stars, fresh air, more connectivity etc. Wanting to rig up a S2S style bug net underneath and strikes me there must be adhesive hooks I could bond onto the underside of the tarp. Google no help – sooooooo?

Anyone?

Glad to see the owners and community still going strong. Dunno, kinda amazing in the bubble lifespan most companies seem to have. I see GoLite (my pack, wind shirt…) went in the meantime and maybe coming back?

But if your shelter is silnylon you’ll need another option, like sewing.

Welcome back. You’ve only missed two things.

Thanks folks!

Yeah, the tarp is Silnylon – is that not the thing to have any more? What is this Cuban Fibre stuff they all speak of now? (I jest, I’ve read up on it now)

So if Cuban is one of the things I’ve missed, what’s the second Ken? Sawyer filters seem better than my red bandana!

Cuben (now called Dyneema Composite Fabric, or DCF) was developed for competitive yacht racing. It’s super lightweight, waterproof, and has very high tear strength so makes a great material for yacht sails. Same qualities make it a good fabric for UL backpacking. Its weaknesses are price and low abrasion and puncture resistance, so you have to baby it a bit. Cuben repair tape is very sticky and strong so can make a good, simple way to add things like hooks to the wall of a cuben shelter, but it does not adhere to silnylon. I would not buy a new shelter in cuben just for the ability to add a hook to it with cuben tape — you can hand-sew a hook in place then use silicone seam sealer to waterproof the stitching.
