I'm trying out several water treatment methods this year, one of which is a SteriPen Traveler Opti I got off STP some time ago. I have looked at solids filters, etc. to fine some easy, quick pre-treatment filter options and nothing really stands out. What works for folks, including DIY stuff? FYI: The Traveler Opti is kind of square, similar to the current Adventurer, so it can't be inserted into the SteriPen bottle cap filters that you then insert a round SteriPen into and flip upside to treat.

I use a noseeum netting cone with an elastic band at the top that I can fit over the widemouth opening. Gets 99% out.
I just use a bandana over the mouth or stuffed into the neck (depending on how you look at it.) Most of the time, it isn't needed in the ADK's.
Another banana – oops! – bandanna user here.
I’ve posted this before… You can easily make a water scoop with pre-filter” that will help you get water easily even from shallow pools — and very quickly filter out all visible sediment and gunk.
If you are only going to tank up overnight you can leave the water out to settle a bit, and floc it with a pinch of alum (found on the spice rack in grocery stores). Literally milligrams will floc several liters of water.
I use a nalogen wide mouth soft canteen..I purchased a special cap from jetflow.com which I use instead of the cap it comes with. I also brought a thin mesh coffee filter, like a bronzeish color, and I cut the inside diameter of the cap and placed it in there. It fits perfect and filters perfect. The cap i got from jetflow I originaly used it with my sawyer filter to connect the sawyer directly to the nalogene.
Some really good ideas here, thanks for taking me to school on you experiences.
Alum
+1
If you have overnight, solids will settle well overnight without alum (but even better with alum). Pour off the clear water REALLY slowly and gently.
If you add alum, you'll get good settling quicker, often a lot in less than an hour. Making it viable to do during a lunch break.
